Nozomi Sasaki wasn't looking for fame when she worked at a clothing store in a shopping mall in Akita back in 2005. A talent scout from the fashion magazine Pinky discovered her by chance, and within months her face was plastered on billboards across half of Japan.
She became an overnight mass phenomenon.
Unlike other models who are content with photo shoots, she decided to try her luck in film in 2008 with a minor role in Handsome Suit. But the real turning point came in 2009, when she starred in My Rainy Days (Tenshi no Koi). In this film she played a seventeen-year-old student with a dark past who falls in love with a history teacher.
The film earned over 700 million yen at the box office in the Asian market. And although critics were harsh about her early acting technique, audiences connected with her naturalness on camera. Sasaki has a rare ability to fill the frame without any big dramatic gestures.
But film is a different language.
In 2014, she moved away from youth romances to lead the cast of Ju-on: The Beginning of the End. Joining such an established horror franchise in Japan was a risky bet. The production demanded an exhausting physical routine and constant tension, but she held her own during a shoot that lasted just three weeks.
Her career is inseparable from her constant presence on Japanese television, and from her marriage to comedian Ken Watabe in 2017. The union put her under fierce public scrutiny, which intensified in 2020 when a marital crisis gripped the Tokyo tabloids. Many analysts predicted the end of her professional career.
And the industry doesn't forgive.
Sasaki chose silence and hard work over paid exclusives. In 2022 she took part in the Netflix series First Love, where she played Tsunemi. Her presence in this international production helped her profile gain recognition beyond Japan's borders. But most importantly, she regained control of her personal narrative through more mature, less idealized roles.
In 2023, she balanced her second pregnancy with filming the series I-mura. During that period she kept a low profile on social media and focused on managing her own clothing brand, iNtimité. As a result, her career as a businesswoman began to outweigh her work as a supporting actress.
By 2024, her participation in the project Aishi no Isao-san was confirmed. The production was carried out under strict confidentiality measures at locations in Kanagawa Prefecture. The shooting contract stipulated maximum ten-hour days to help the actress balance her family life.
The total budget of her latest advertising deal for a cosmetics brand reached 50 million yen per year under contract.
