Raúl Lavié listened to a cassette recorded by a 13-year-old in Bahía Blanca and decided to take it to Buenos Aires without asking anyone's permission. On that tape, he was singing Abel Pintos.

León Gieco put up the money and the label to produce Para cantar he nacido in 1997. That debut placed a teenager with an elastic voice at the center of traditional Argentine folk music, at a time when the provincial festival circuit was a ruthless gatekeeper for anyone who didn't dress the part of the countryside, with bombacha pants and colt-skin boots.

The following year, the Cosquín Festival gave him a special mention, and older audiences assumed they were looking at the generational heir to classic zamba. But the musician's intentions were heading down a different road.

No one expected him to shake up the game so quickly.

From León Gieco's protégé to the genre's heretic

For a decade he recorded formal folk albums such as Todos los días un poco in 1999 and Sentidos in 2004. They were technical, meticulously measured works in which his voice gained body while Argentina's record industry sank after the 2001 crisis. Pintos learned to tour town by town in a van, with no backing from the major labels.

The point of friction came in 2007 with The Key. The artist began slipping in pop-structured ballads, unapologetic electric guitars and melodies designed for mainstream radio. Genre purists accused him of commercial betrayal, while record labels calculated the potential of the change.

Because folk music didn't fill soccer stadiums in Buenos Aires, but melodic pop did. In 2010 he released Revolución, a work in which native percussion was reduced to mere acoustic decoration to give absolute priority to the massive chorus.

And the box office proved him right.

Conquering stadiums and the business of live music

In May 2012, he recorded Sueño dorado live among the ruins of the Quilmes people in Tucumán. The audiovisual edition sold more than 120,000 physical copies in just a few weeks and launched a continuous concert tour that packed mid-sized theaters across the Southern Cone.

Before moving into the mass market, he already controlled every detail of sound and lighting for his shows. The self-titled album Abel in 2013 put him on the stage of the Estadio Único in La Plata for the first time, and in 2014 he closed two consecutive nights at the Estadio River Plate in front of eighty thousand paying fans. He had stopped being a folk-club singer and become a major live-music brand.

So the logical next step was to take financial control of his shows. In 2016 he released 11, mastered between Madrid and London, aiming for an Anglo-Saxon sound that dropped any folk roots from the final mix of drums and bass.

The move into production offices

In 2021 he founded the production company Plan Divino with his partners Marcelo González and Jorge Quinteros. The company was created not only to manage his record catalog, but also to produce large-scale theater, acquire entertainment venues and stage other people's events.

Under that structure, he produced the stage adaptation of Casados con Hijos at the Teatro Gran Rex during the summer of 2023, running daily shows that drew nearly two hundred thousand people before exporting the model to Córdoba. That same year, he recorded Alta en el cielo, a symphonic album of patriotic songs with the Teatro Colón orchestra, whose rights he donated to schools and education ministries.

To close 2024, he signed a joint residency of 34 concerts at the Luna Park stadium in Buenos Aires with Luciano Pereyra, selling out every seat with a double-show format each day and a logistics crew of more than sixty technicians on the payroll every day.
