Adriana Lima was not born to be just a pretty face in a bargain catalog.
In 1981, she was born in Salvador da Bahia, and as a teenager she already understood that her look was a precision work tool. She won local contests, but her real breakthrough came when she moved to New York at fifteen, barely speaking English. That decision fueled one of the most lucrative careers in the visual industry.
Then came the contract that changed everything.
In 1999, she signed with Victoria's Secret. It wasn't just about walking in lingerie, because the brand wanted personalities who could hold up under a film camera. Lima had that mix of edginess and shyness that worked perfectly in the close-ups of ads directed by Michael Bay. Her contract remained in effect for nineteen years, surpassing any previous record for longevity with the brand.
Wong Kar-wai chose her in 2001 to star in the short film The Follow as part of BMW's The Hire series. She shared the screen with Mickey Rourke and Clive Owen. In that piece, she proved she could hold a silence without the scene falling apart. Critics of the time noticed her not for her height but for how she handled tension in the back seat of a car.
But film was never her absolute priority.
She appeared in series like Ugly Betty in 2008, playing herself. It was a bit of self-parody needed to humanize a woman the public saw as unreachable. She also made a cameo in Ocean's 8 during 2018, where the production aimed to recreate the atmosphere of the Met Gala with total accuracy. Her presence guaranteed visual authenticity in big-budget productions that needed the glamour of real fashion.
In 2017, Forbes ranked her as the second highest-paid model on the planet, earning an estimated 10.5 million dollars a year. Her exit from the runways in 2018 seemed final after nearly two decades of uninterrupted contracts. But the entertainment industry is cyclical, and Lima knows how to wait for the right moment to resurface without wearing out her image.
In 2023, FIFA named her Global Ambassador for Fans. It was a commercial move to attract female audiences to soccer ahead of the Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. That same year she worked again with Victoria's Secret on the launch of a specific fragrance called Heavenly and starred in the campaign for The Icon.
Her return to the runway took place in October 2024.
She appeared in the brand's New York comeback runway show after six years without the televised event. The broadcast generated millions of social media interactions, although specialist critics focused on the show's technical structure. Lima ended her appearance with a sober gesture toward the cameras before disappearing into the back of the stage.
In 2024, her estimated net worth exceeded 95 million dollars.
