Aimee Lou Wood went to auditions for Sex Education in 2018 hoping to play Lily. But the casting directors saw something in her energy that fit another character better. She ended up bringing Aimee Gibbs to life, and the script was adapted so the character shared her real name.
In 2019, the premiere of the Netflix series pulled her out of obscurity overnight.
And the gamble paid off.
Her training is academic and rigorous. She graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in 2017, where she honed her craft in productions of Scuttlers and Vinegar Tom. She is an actress who builds from the text rather than from the image. Her teachers recall that she always preferred roles with rough edges over flat leading parts.
Following the success of the series, she sought other challenges to avoid being typecast in youth comedy. In 2021, she won the BAFTA for Best Actress in a Comedy for her role as Aimee Gibbs. But that same year, she was already working on projects that demanded a very different kind of emotional restraint.
In 2022, she starred in Living alongside Bill Nighy. In this adaptation of Ikiru by Akira Kurosawa, she plays Margaret Harris, a young woman who represents vitality against the rigidity of 1950s London bureaucracy. Critics praised her ability to hold her own in close-up opposite a industry veteran, despite a 50-year age gap.
Nobody expected such a dry change of register.
Because Wood understands that silence communicates more than screaming. In Living, she set aside the comedic mannerisms that made her famous in favor of a minimalist performance. Kazuo Ishiguro's script demanded a technical precision that is only gained on the stage.
Theater is where Wood tests her physical endurance. In 2020, she took part in a version of Uncle Vanya filmed at the Harold Pinter Theatre during the COVID-19 restrictions. Her portrayal of Sonya showed she could handle classic drama as easily as contemporary dialogue.
In 2023, she took on the role of Sally Bowles in the musical Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club in London. It's a demanding role that calls for singing, dancing and maintaining a constant state of emotional collapse for nearly three hours. 8 out of 10 reviews highlighted her raw vulnerability in the musical numbers.
But her ambition doesn't stop at acting. She has started getting involved in writing and producing so she can have greater control over the stories she tells. She is interested in the psychology behind female bonds and the power dynamics in closed work environments.
In 2024, she joined the cast of the miniseries Toxic Town to portray the Corby toxic waste scandal. The project centers on the legal battle of a group of mothers against the British government. It's a socially driven drama based on real events that steers clear of any visual gimmicks.
In 2025, filming for the third season of The White Lotus moved to locations on Koh Samui and Phuket in Thailand. Wood shot her scenes under the direction of Mike White at a luxury resort that closed its doors exclusively for the HBO production.
