In February 2018, Amaia Romero won a top-rated television contest against three and a half million viewers without singing a single verse, seemingly on autopilot. She had just turned nineteen and had a conservatory piano education that clashed with the machinery of commercial TV sets. That massive exposure threatened to consume her.

Record labels wanted to turn the Navarran singer into a fast-consumption product. They were looking for instant hooks for radio playlists and a massive tour through sports arenas to squeeze every drop out of the contest's momentum. But she chose to reject prefabricated formulas.

Amaia slammed the door with grace.

She went to Buenos Aires to record her first studio album, Pero no pasa nada (2019), with Santiago Motorizado. She swapped electronic keyboards for analog guitars and lyrics that sounded like intimate confessions from a bedroom. Audiences at alternative festivals suddenly discovered that the young pianist from Pamplona understood the raw edge of independent rock far better than much of the commercial circuit.

The screen as an anomaly and the challenge of Los Javis

Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo knew that strange drive firsthand. In 2023, they called her to join the cast of La Mesías, a Movistar Plus+ production that explored family trauma, religious madness and pop culture across seven relentless episodes.

Cecilia Pudor's role required walking a fine tightrope. Amaia played a young woman locked away by her own mother, who belongs to the Catholic pop group Stella Maris. She had to balance childlike innocence and restrained pain without slipping into parody. In the seventh episode she sat down at the piano to sing El árbol, an intimate song written in her first months away from television.

No one expected the screen to suit her so well.

Film critics praised her restraint in front of the camera and her command of silence alongside veteran actors. That performance earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the 2024 Feroz Awards. She built a broken character with the purest naturalness.

In June 2024, the Cinema Jove Film Festival in Valencia awarded her the Un Futuro de Cine prize. The recognition confirmed that her acting debut was not a passing promotional stunt but a genuine dramatic calling.

From Sectarian Pop to Almodóvar's Set

Even before stepping onto a film set, Amaia was pacing her career with an unusual calm. In 2022, she released her second album, Cuando no sé quién soy, teaming up with producer Alizzz to blend the jota navarra of Yamaguchi with contemporary arrangements. As a result, film directors were quick to see in her an actress with an expressiveness free of academic mannerisms.

In 2024 she took part in the feature-length documentary Marisol, llámame Pepa, sharing her testimony and artistic perspective. There, she unpacked the traps of child stardom and the need to protect one's privacy from public scrutiny.

Her definitive leap into auteur cinema came through Pedro Almodóvar. In 2026, the production company El Deseo confirmed her casting in Amarga Navidad alongside Bárbara Lennie, Patrick Criado and Leonardo Sbaraglia. During filming in Madrid, the director from La Mancha shot long, unbroken takes of her singing to heighten the dramatic tension of the script.

The film wrapped production with a budget of 6.2 million euros and eight weeks of work shot on analog film.
