Amber Marshall

The veterinarian who ended up on set

Amber Marshall was born in London, Ontario, in 1988. She wasn't chasing red carpet fame or the spotlight of Toronto. Her real interest was in stables and animal medicine.

Before arriving at the ranch, she worked as an assistant at a veterinary clinic in her hometown. That hands-on experience taught her how horses behave long before a script ever required it. In 2003, she played a kidnapped teenager in The Elizabeth Smart Story, and her performance earned her a nomination for the Young Artist Awards in Los Angeles.

The industry had other plans.

In 2007 she accepted the role of Amy Fleming in the series Heartland. From that moment on, her real life and her fiction became almost indistinguishable to the general public. But Marshall never let fame disrupt her physical work routine out in the field.

She moved to a farm on the outskirts of Calgary to stay close to the set. She bought her own cattle and horses to maintain a genuine connection to the land while the cameras were off.

The business of TV longevity

The series is based on the novels by Lauren Brooke. When filming of the first season began, no one expected the project to surpass fifteen episodes. TV markets tend to punish slow-paced, rural stories.

And the gamble paid off.

Marshall performed most of her stunts herself, without needing stunt doubles. In 2013 she married Shawn Turner on her own ranch, and the wedding became part of the production's fan lore in a natural way. She surpassed 250 recorded episodes and became one of the most profitable figures in Canadian television for her ability to attract three generations of viewers.

But success didn't keep her in front of the camera alone. In 2023 Marshall moved into directing episodes of the series itself to control the story's tone. Her role in the production stopped being limited to standing in front of the lens.

Winters and production numbers

In 2024 she starred in the TV movie A Christmas Letter, filmed entirely in Ontario. The production faced extreme temperatures that forced cuts to outdoor shooting hours.

Off set, she runs her own product line and a quarterly magazine about rural lifestyle. She doesn't use outside PR agencies to manage her social media. She prefers to show the reality of her animals without professional filters.

Filming season 18 of Heartland in 2024 kept the production budget stable despite rising logistics costs in Alberta. International syndication deals ensure the series will air in more than one hundred countries over the next decade.

The property where she lives covers 100 acres dedicated to breeding Quarter Horses.
