Anamaria Vartolomei moved to France from Romania at the age of six, with an empty suitcase and no connections. Her parents worked in construction and cleaning while she learned the language by watching cartoons on a tube television. There was no artistic tradition in her family and no plans to conquer the film industry.
In 2011, she made her debut in My Little Princess after being chosen from hundreds of girls at an open casting call. She was ten years old. Her work opposite Isabelle Huppert in a story about a photographer's sexualization of her daughter was so raw that French critics stopped seeing her as a passing child actress. That shoot earned her her first nomination for the Lumière Awards when she was barely a decade old.
And her instinct paid off.
During her teenage years she kept a low but steady profile. She appeared in productions such as Jacky in the Kingdom of Women in 2014 and L'Échange des princesses in 2017. But her career did not follow the usual script of Paris's young stars, because she preferred roles that lived in silence and discomfort.
In 2021, she starred in The Event under the direction of Audrey Diwan. The film adapted Annie Ernaux's novel about illegal abortion in 1960s France and demanded a physical effort that few actresses of her generation would have accepted. The camera stayed close to her neck and her eyes for nearly the entire runtime, never giving the viewer a break.
She won the César Award for Most Promising Actress in 2022 for that role. In Venice the film took the Golden Lion, and her name began to be heard in the offices of major European studios. But she chose to stay in politically and socially charged auteur cinema before making the leap to period superproductions.
It was a purely instinctive decision.
Because Vartolomei understands that film is a tool for recording history. In an interview after the release of Diwan's film, she said she wasn't interested in fame for its own sake, but in the ability to embody traumas that society prefers to forget. So she turned down several commercial projects to wait for the right script.
In 2024, she took on the challenge of playing Maria Schneider in the biopic Maria. Jessica Palud's film focused on the shooting of Last Tango in Paris and the abuse the actress suffered at the hands of Bernardo Bertolucci and Marlon Brando. Vartolomei had to tackle the recreation of one of the most infamous scenes in film history to denounce the lack of protection for women on 1970s sets.
That same year she took part in the ambitious adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo, playing Haydée. She shared the screen with Pierre Niney in a production with a budget of €43 million. It was her definitive entry into big-budget French cinema, without losing the restraint that has defined her since her independent film beginnings.
And the bet paid off once again.
Her 2025 schedule includes international projects such as Mickey 17 directed by Bong Joon-ho. In this science fiction film she shares the cast with Robert Pattinson and Toni Collette under the Warner Bros. banner. Filming took place mainly at Leavesden Studios in the United Kingdom, with an estimated budget of $150 million.
