From Manicures to the Algorithm

Anastasia Ivleeva did not come up through the film set. In 2013, she worked as a manicurist in St. Petersburg while saving enough money to move to Moscow. She had no industry contacts but knew how to work the rhythm of short videos on social media before being an influencer became a common career path.

She started by posting fifteen-second comedy clips to Instagram. In those videos she poked fun at female stereotypes and the nightlife of the Russian capital. She built millions of followers without help from talent agencies. So her move to traditional television was a logical consequence of her digital reach.

Ivleeva realized the algorithm was more profitable than a TV network contract.

In 2017, she joined the travel show Oryol i Reshka as a host. The format involved traveling to foreign cities on a budget of one hundred dollars or with an unlimited credit card. Her natural charm on camera and her lack of filters when trying street food made her the most recognizable face of Russian television for the generation born after the nineties.

Taking On Dramatic Fiction

Ivleeva's ambitions didn't stop at travel journals. In 2018, she founded her own production company and launched AgentShow on YouTube. It was an interview show with a flashy aesthetic and physical challenges that made guests uncomfortable. But the real change of direction came in 2022 with the premiere of the series Monastyr.

In this drama, she played Maria, a party-loving young woman who has to hide in an Orthodox monastery after getting caught up in a scandal in Dubai. Local critics expected an acting disaster. However, the series broke viewing records on the Kinopoisk platform and drew more than two million viewers during its first month on air.

And her success silenced the film scholars.

During the filming of Monastyr in 2022, the actress moved away from her usual comedic image. She worked under the direction of Aleksandr Molochnikov to build a character that ranged from absolute hedonism to the sobriety of religious confinement. That performance allowed her to demand fees that until then were reserved only for actors trained at the Moscow Art Theatre.

The downfall at the Mutabor club

Ivleeva's career suffered an irreversible blow in late 2023. She held a private party at the Mutabor club in Moscow with a dress code that required guests to come almost naked. Photos of the event leaked amid extreme conservative political sensitivity in Russia. The authorities reacted immediately and harshly.

She lost all of her advertising contracts in less than a week.

Telecom brands and jewelry firms pulled their ads from billboards across the country. In 2024, Russian courts fined her several times for organizing an event deemed contrary to traditional values. Her social media, once buzzing with luxury brands, shifted to much more modest and closely monitored content.

In May 2024, the Moscow Court rejected her final appeal against a fine for discrediting the armed forces in old posts. Her tax debts rose to more than 100 million rubles after a surprise audit of her snack and beverage production companies. Filming of her next movie project was indefinitely suspended due to a lack of private funding.
