Andrew Garfield has two passports and a way of approaching acting that borders on physical obsession. He was born in Los Angeles in 1983 but grew up in Surrey, England. That duality marked his first steps at the Manchester Royal Exchange. There he learned that silence communicates more than shouting, and that British theater has no patience for a lack of technique.
In 2007, he appeared in Lions for Lambs under the direction of Robert Redford. It was his first taste of the high-level American film industry. But the real turning point came in 2010. David Fincher cast him as Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network and made him repeat a take by smashing a laptop dozens of times.
And the gamble paid off.
That role allowed him to move away from the image of a young British actor and onto the radar of the major Hollywood studios. Seven million dollars was his base salary for entering the franchise machine shortly afterward.
In 2012, he took on the web-slinging suit in The Amazing Spider-Man. The experience was bittersweet. Garfield has always been an avid reader of comics and wanted to explore the orphan's trauma in depth, but he ran into Sony's marketing demands.
The sequel to 2014 received a frosty critical reception. The studio canceled the third installment, and the actor found himself in a professional limbo. Still, that fall was necessary for his transformation into a prestige actor. He sought refuge with directors who prioritize storytelling over visual spectacle.
In 2016, he worked with Martin Scorsese on Silence. He lost nearly twenty kilos to play a Jesuit priest in 17th-century Japan. The shoot in Taiwan was grueling and required him to go on real spiritual retreats.
That same year, he starred in Hacksaw Ridge under the direction of Mel Gibson. The film grossed 175 million dollars worldwide. His performance as Desmond Doss earned him his first Academy Award nomination and confirmed that his career did not depend on red spandex.
Garfield has no fear of looking ridiculous or of excess. In 2018, he won the Tony Award for his role in the Broadway play Angels in America. He spent eight hours a day on stage exploring the AIDS crisis. And he did it with a physical commitment that left his castmates exhausted.
In 2021, he returned to the Marvel universe with a supporting appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He did so under a strict confidentiality agreement that forced him to lie to the press for months. It was a public redemption for fans who had watched him exit through the back door years earlier.
During that same period, he premiered Tick, Tick… Boom! on a streaming platform. He learned to sing and play the piano from scratch to bring Jonathan Larson to life. The musical's technical production required him to record the songs live to preserve the texture of his voice.
In 2024, he filmed the romantic drama We Live in Time alongside Florence Pugh. The movie focuses on the non-linear structure of a relationship across a decade.
For 2025, he has scheduled the release of After the Hunt, a thriller directed by Luca Guadagnino with a production budget of 80 million dollars. Filming took place on location in London under strict security measures to prevent script leaks.
