Angie Jibaja hit the Chilean film scene with a force nobody expected from a runway model. It happened in 2006, when director Boris Quercia cast her to co-star in El Rey de los Huevones. Her character didn't call for big monologues, but it did demand a physical presence that could fill the screen.
The film was a resounding box office success. It drew more than 150,000 moviegoers to theaters, a number that instantly put her on the radar of producers in the region. But the film industry is fickle with those who come from the world of fashion.
And the bet only paid off partially.
Although her debut suggested a long career in scripted television, the weight of her public image began to gain ground. In 2010, she appeared in the series Las viudas de los jueves, a co-production that promised to elevate her dramatic profile. But the media noise in Peru and Chile always ended up overshadowing her attempts to be taken seriously as a method actress.
The market changed, and she adapted to the format that paid the bills best. In 2012, she joined the show Pareja Perfecta. It marked the start of a phase in which her private life became the main storyline. Film casting directors stopped calling as often as before because her face now belonged to daily television viewing.
There was no clear strategy.
In 2017, she returned to Chile to take part in Doble Tentación, another reality TV format that played up her more controversial side. By then, the actress who had made such an impression in 2006 seemed to have been buried under layers of personal controversy. Offers to star in feature films gave way to invitations to late-night talk shows.
Her time on Chilean television brought her enormous fame but cost her the prestige that film offers. In this business, it's hard to return to the set once the public has watched you cry live every week.
The absolute turning point came in 2020. A violent incident left Jibaja hospitalized in a Lima clinic after she was hit by several gunshots. That event closed off any chance of an immediate return to professional acting. Her recovery was slow and marked by a constant legal battle over custody of her children.
In 2023, she made a major change in her life and joined Jehovah's Witnesses. She wanted to move away from the addictions that had derailed her advertising contracts and her ties with production companies. That same year, she moved back to Chile with the intention of cleaning up her image and finding less toxic spaces in the entertainment world.
The film industry forgot her.
At the end of 2023, she underwent laser tattoo removal to erase traces of her earlier stage. In 2024, her appearances have been limited to brief social media posts and a few local fashion event collaborations. Her profile with acting agencies has not registered any new scripted projects in more than five years.
The latest official figure for her income from television image rights was closed under a confidentiality agreement in Santiago, Chile.
