Anna Popplewell joined the Allsorts acting school at just six years old. She wasn't chasing worldwide fame but an after-school activity in North London. Her real debut in front of the cameras came in 1998 with the television adaptation of Frenchman’s Creek, and from that moment, her work pace never slowed down.
Because before becoming a queen in a fantasy world, she was an efficient supporting actress in period dramas.
In 2003, she appeared in Girl with a Pearl Earring alongside Scarlett Johansson. That shoot gave her a close look at how a prestige European production worked before she leapt into the void of big franchises. Nobody around her imagined the scale of what would come soon after.
The release of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 2005 changed her everyday life overnight. She played Susan Pevensie and had to learn to shoot a bow while handling the pressure of a franchise aiming to compete with The Lord of the Rings.
And the Disney plan only half worked out.
She reprised the role in 2008 with Prince Caspian and made a brief appearance in the 2010 installment. But while her co-stars chased the next blockbuster, she chose to enroll at the University of Oxford. She completed her degree in English Language and Literature at Magdalen College without making media headlines.
During those years of study, she turned down several major projects to focus on her exams. The industry tends to forget those who step away quickly, but Popplewell was not afraid of professional silence.
Her return to the front lines came in 2013 when she signed on to the CW series Reign. Over sixty-two episodes she played Lady Lola and moved away from the child-star image she had carried since her teens.
Her departure from the series in 2016 was permanent.
That period in Toronto taught her that her profile fit better in the secondary market and in London theater. In 2018, she took part in the short film The Last Birthday and worked on various voice projects for video games and audiobooks.
In 2023, she joined Warner Bros' horror universe with The Nun II. Her role as Kate placed her in a production that grossed over $ 260 million worldwide. The film had an estimated budget of $38 million.
