In January 2026, comedian Artie Lange appeared in a photo at Dave Attell's birthday dinner. He looked unusually healthy. And his nose, destroyed by decades of substance abuse, showed an obvious surgical reconstruction that erased years of physical stigma in the tabloids.
It was the quiet comeback of a man who has died several times.
Arthur Steven Lange Jr. was born in New Jersey in 1967 and grew up in the shadow of an accident that left his father quadriplegic. That early trauma shaped a humor built on self-deprecation and a brutal honesty that bordered on the pathological. For Lange, laughter was never an ornament but a defense mechanism against the guilt of having survived his role model.
In 1995, he moved to Los Angeles to join the original cast of MADtv. But his time on the sketch show ended abruptly due to his cocaine problems. And although his career seemed over before it started, actor Norm Macdonald rescued him for the film Dirty Work in 1998.
That role gave him a second chance in the film industry.
In 2001, he joined The Howard Stern Show to replace Jackie Martling. It was far more than a simple radio gig. Lange became the human and chaotic counterpoint of American national radio. For eight years, he was the center of the show's wildest stories, because his salary at the peak of his popularity reached more than two million dollars a year.
But success hid a spiral of heroin and gambling. In 2006, he wrote, produced and starred in Beer League while battling an addiction that caused him to fall asleep on live television. So audiences watched in real time as a man fell apart while trying to joke about his own weight.
The final downfall came in January 2010.
After a suicide attempt that kept him out of the media, Lange went through a series of rehab stints and failed comebacks. He published his first memoir, Too Fat to Fish, in 2008, and it hit number one on the bestseller lists. But neither literary acclaim nor the support of his fellow comedians could halt his physical decline.
In 2017, the HBO series Crashing offered him a role that was essentially a version of himself. Creator Pete Holmes wanted to show the rawest side of the New York comedy circuit. Lange took on the challenge and delivered a brutally honest performance over three seasons. But in 2019, a photo of his police mugshot went viral, showing his nose completely collapsed.
That was the definitive turning point for his health.
In May 2026, it was confirmed that Lange had been sober for over seven years after completing a probation program for drug possession. His public appearances became more selective and far more professional. He also moved away from his self-destructive tone to focus on his podcast Artie Lange's Halfway House, where he interviews comedy figures from a recovery perspective.
The stand-up tour he launched in March 2026 sold out theaters in New Jersey and New York. Lange no longer seeks absolute chaos on stage. He prefers the precision of a veteran who knows the true cost of every laugh. In May 2026, his estimated net worth stood at 10 million dollars after he settled his legal debts.
