Hugh Grant glared at the microphone with contempt while Ashley Graham tried to save a live broadcast for ABC. It happened in front of the cameras at the 95th Academy Awards ceremony in March 2023. Grant gave curt one-word answers, and she smiled, gritted her teeth, and held the shot without losing her composure on air.

That one-minute sequence showcased her real talent under the spotlight. Many thought her presence at the ceremony was a mere publicity stunt. But Graham had spent more than two decades learning to hold her own in front of merciless lenses.

No one handed her that square meter of carpet.

The Live TV Slap

In 2000, a talent scout from the I & I agency spotted her walking through a shopping mall in Omaha, Nebraska, when she was just twelve years old. Her family had recently moved from Lincoln, and the teenager was dealing daily with dyslexia and attention deficit.

New York welcomed her when she had just turned seventeen. She signed with Wilhelmina in 2001, moved to Ford in 2003, and firsthand faced demeaning remarks about her body in dark casting rooms. In 2010, ABC censored a Lane Bryant lingerie ad starring her as too provocative for prime time. The censorship had the opposite effect: more than 800,000 online views during its first weekend online.

That television ban taught her the rules of the mass media game. In February 2016, she appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in a size 44, breaking the beauty standards of American newsstands.

Before long, the entertainment business came knocking at her door.

That same year, she joined America's Next Top Model as a judge for VH1, where she shared the judges' table with Tyra Banks across 43 seasons. Traditional television demanded control of body language that Graham learned on the fly, moving from co-hosting the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants between 2016 and 2018 to handling live broadcasts with no safety net.

Negotiating Control of the Frame

From other people's sets, she moved on to production decisions. In 2018, she launched the interview and podcast Pretty Big Deal, where she hosted filmmakers, actresses such as Amy Schumer and businesswomen such as Kim Kardashian on her own editorial terms. She didn't depend on the judgment of a network editor.

In 2019, she hosted the American Beauty Star pageant for Lifetime. She demanded executive producer credits to safeguard casting decisions. Graham contractually required physical diversity among the contestants and shaped everything from set lighting to the pacing of the final edit.

In 2023, Discovery+ and HGTV entrusted her with hosting Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge, a four-episode format in which she oversaw a large-scale home renovation tied to the release of Greta Gerwig's movie. The show drew solid ratings in the U.S. cable market.

And the move paid off perfectly.

Runway Fiction and Armored Budgets

Breaking into film took time, as Hollywood often limits fashion figures to silent cameos. Graham appeared in the independent film Dirty Old Town in 2012 and lent her image to high-rotation music videos such as Toothbrush by DNCE in 2016.

But the opportunity within a major studio came in August 2025 during the filming of The Devil Wears Prada 2. Director David Frankel cast her at the American Museum of Natural History in New York to join the Disney cast alongside Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep. Her scene, released in theaters in April 2026, served as a direct nod to the digital transformation of the New York press.

The shoot for Frankel marked her formal entry into the heavyweight machinery of the industry. Disney allocated a production budget of more than $ 90 million to bring the dramedy to life in locations in Manhattan and Milan.

On that August day on Central Park West, the shooting schedule required six continuous takes of her dialogue under 18-kilowatt HMI lights before the crew's lunch break.
