Aurélien Letheux wasn't looking for television when television found him. In 2016, he took on the challenge of leading the French version of one of the most demanding motoring formats in the world. His hands were stained with grease, and he had a clear vision of classic mechanics.
It was the start of an unplanned personal brand.
His profile was a perfect fit for the relaunch of Occasions à saisir. The show needed an expert who could explain complex processes without boring the average viewer. Letheux brought the mix of technical rigor and easygoing charm that producers wanted for RMC Découverte.
Before the cameras, he was already working in vehicle restoration. At his Mecanicus workshop in Normandy, he learned that profit margins on a classic car are almost always an illusion. Every rusted bolt can ruin a month's budget.
That raw honesty carried over to the screen. Letheux doesn't play a mechanic; he works as one in front of a film crew that sometimes got in the way more than it helped. Recording schedules were brutal.
The chemistry with Gerry Blyenberg proved to be the engine of the show's success. While one negotiated seemingly impossible prices in European markets, the other sweated in the pit to salvage useless engine blocks. In 2020, the show's audience hit massive viewership peaks that justified its open-ended renewal.
Profit was never his only goal.
Letheux has always championed preserving automotive heritage over simple trading. During the production of 2022, he faced technical challenges with models that no longer had spare parts available on the official market. So he had to make them from scratch.
But his work isn't limited to turning wrenches under three thousand watts of light. As a businessman, he knows the volatility of the collectors' market in Europe well. He knows that a mistake when buying a chassis can mean a loss of twenty thousand euros in a single morning.
His work as a producer lets him control the pace of the story. He knows that the 2024 viewer wants authenticity, not fast-paced editing that hides the real flaws of a repair. That's why he insists the mistakes get filmed too.
In 2023, he expanded his reach in digital content focused on applied engineering. But his base of operations is still far from the Paris spotlights. He prefers the cold of his industrial shed and the sound of a well-tuned eight-cylinder engine.
And the gamble paid off.
Running a high-end workshop while producing video content comes with thousands of euros a month in liability insurance costs. It's the real price of working with machines that exceed two hundred kilometers per hour.
