Katy Perry promised him the moon in front of millions of viewers, and Benson Boone decided to switch off the cameras. It happened in the spring of 2021 during the auditions for American Idol. He had just turned eighteen, had a volcanic voice capable of moving from a whisper to a raw roar, and had a spot secured among the top twenty-four contestants on the show.
Nobody walks away from national television on a whim.
Boone knew that signing that contract meant giving up creative control over his songs for years. So he packed his things in Los Angeles, returned to Monroe, and shut himself in the family garage to record demos on a cheap electric keyboard.
In high school he was a diving champion and had no idea he carried such a vocal force in his chest until a friend asked him to sing at a school festival. That gymnastic discipline defined his physical presence on stage. While his rivals opted for static poses at the microphone, Boone learned to project his voice while performing backflips off the lid of a grand piano.
Dan Reynolds heard his homemade recordings online and took just a few days to offer him a spot at Night Street Records, a subsidiary of Warner Records. In October 2021, Ghost Town came out, a track on which Boone himself played drums, piano and guitar.
And the gamble paid off.
That ballad surpassed 700 million streams on digital platforms without any support from traditional radio stations. The label saw that it had a diamond in the rough. But Boone refused to work with prerecorded drums and insisted on producing with dense acoustic boxes, spring reverb and vocal dynamics that would break through the stereo mix.
In 2022 he released In the Stars, an acoustic elegy written after his grandmother's death. The verses worked like confessions in the dim light, while the choruses exploded with a stadium-rock punch straight out of the seventies.
In January 2024 he released Beautiful Things. The single reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and racked up more than a billion streams in just five months, thanks to a wild structural contrast: ninety seconds of an intimate ballad followed by an explosion of vocal distortion that bordered on hard rock.
In April 2024, his debut album, Fireworks & Rollerblades, arrived, recorded with producer Evan Blair. Blair decided to almost entirely skip pitch-correction software to preserve the rough edges of his high register.
The good take was always the most imperfect one.
The album debuted at number six on the U.S. sales chart and confirmed that young audiences readily embraced analog string and horn arrangements. Over the following months, Boone toured large-scale festivals across Europe and the Americas, performing up to three acrobatic flips per show without losing his breath.
In June 2025, he released his second full-length album, American Heart, led by tracks such as Mystical Magical and Sorry I'm Here for Someone Else. The album debuted at number two on the U.S. Billboard 200 with 142,000 copies sold in its first week.
In 2026 he released the single The Time Of My Life, produced by Jack Antonoff. The session was recorded on two-inch magnetic tape with a Telefunken U47 tube microphone dating from 1958.
