Berk Atan never set out to become an actor when he started stopping balls in the youth ranks of Altay SK. His family breathed football, and the logical destiny was the goal. But his physique won out over the sporting tactics, and in 2012 he won the Best Model of Turkey contest before being crowned the world's best model that same year.
That title is often a glass trap. Many stay on the surface of billboards and never manage to get a casting director to take them seriously. Atan quickly understood that good looks are a ticket in Turkey, but they don't guarantee a place on set.
In 2013, he made his debut in the series Her Şey Yolunda. It was a minor role, but it taught him that the camera demanded more than a chiseled jaw. His training at Beykent University was no mere formality, as he chose to study acting rigorously while advertising offers piled up on his desk.
That was no accident.
The real breakout came in 2015 with Güneşin Kızları. He played Savaş Mertoğlu, and the fan frenzy went far beyond the network's expectations. The series reached massive ratings peaks and put him on the radar of major Istanbul production companies.
The actor then decided he didn't want to be just the go-to heartthrob in light comedies. In 2017 he filmed Dayan Yüreğim, and shortly after he starred in Cennet’in Gözyaşları. This last production was sold to more than 50 countries and made his face recognizable in markets as far apart as Latin America and Eastern Europe.
But the project that changed his working dynamic came in 2020. He accepted the role of Taner in Gönül Dağı, a series that steers away from the luxuries of skyscrapers to focus on rural life and the impossible inventions of three cousins in a remote village.
Mud weighs more than makeup.
Atan had to adapt to filming in extreme temperatures in the Eskişehir region. The series steered away from urban romance clichés and embraced a traditional narrative that connected with heartland Turkey. The success was so overwhelming that the production surpassed 140 episodes broadcast without interruption.
The stability of a long-running series lets an actor pick his battles. Instead of stacking three mediocre projects a year, Atan chose to focus on the evolution of a single character over more than four seasons. This gave him control over his image that few of his generation's peers have.
In 2023, the actor selectively handled his advertising deals with technology and men's fashion brands. He didn't accept just any contract. His priority was staying true to the hardworking, down-to-earth man image he projected on public television.
The contract was signed for three additional seasons.
During filming of 2024, the series kept a screen share above 10% in its time slot. Outdoor shoots in the natural steppe were scheduled for an average of 12 hours a day to make the most of the sunlight. The budget per episode rose by 20% to cover the logistics of the new production phase.
