Carrie Underwood arrived in Hollywood without attending acting schools in Los Angeles or struggling through Broadway casting calls. Her springboard was a television stage in 2005, when millions of viewers voted for that girl from Checotah with a colossal voice. That night she won the fourth season of American Idol and signed a multimillion-dollar record deal.
Moving from the music stage to the film set, however, is often full of stumbles for country stars. Underwood preferred to test the waters in comedy before taking on more dramatic roles. In 2010, she appeared in an episode of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother, playing Tiffany, a pharmacist who kept the main character waiting on the romantic sidelines.
TV critics breathed a sigh of relief.
In 2011, she made her movie debut in Soul Surfer, directed by Sean McNamara. The film told the true story of surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost an arm in a shark attack. Underwood played Sarah Hill, a youth counselor who served as a spiritual anchor for the young athlete on the Hawaiian beaches.
The film earned more than $47 million at the North American box office on a modest budget of $18 million. The industry took note of its appeal to family audiences. Underwood avoided melodramatic excess in her scenes with Dennis Quaid and AnnaSophia Robb, though producers knew her presence worked above all as an infallible commercial draw for audiences in the heartland.
Two years later, she took on a highly demanding technical project at NBC. In 2013, she starred in The Sound of Music Live!, playing Maria von Trapp in front of the cameras in a three-hour live broadcast with no cuts and no chance to correct mistakes.
And the broadcast drew 18.5 million viewers in a single night. Some theater critics questioned her ease with spoken dialogue, but no one doubted her vocal skill in the Rodgers and Hammerstein score.
No one at the network expected such an audience.
Rather than chasing one movie role after another, Underwood understood that the screen demanded diversifying her reach. Since 2013, she has lent her voice and image to the opening sequence of NBC's Sunday Night Football, a showcase that kept her on screen for more than twelve consecutive years, during the fall, on the sports broadcast with the biggest audience share on television.
She lent her voice to animated projects, made a cameo in the comedy Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping in 2016, and developed fitness programs before settling in Las Vegas. Between 2021 and April 2025, she held her REFLECTION residency at Resorts World Theatre, a show featuring automated rails, water curtains and real fire, planned with the technical ambition of a cinematic blockbuster.
In 2025, she came full circle with television, joining the American Idol judges' table for its twenty-third season, taking the seat previously held by Katy Perry, alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. Twenty years after winning the competition as an unknown contestant, she returned to the studio to evaluate the technical abilities of the new hopefuls.
So her contract was extended through 2026.
Auditions for that twenty-fourth season began in August 2025 under the supervision of executive producer Megan Wolflick and the multi-camera production standards of ABC in Los Angeles.

Things you probably didn't know about Carrie Underwood
Sometimes, that mountain you've been climbing, is just a grain of sand.
God put us here on this carnival ride, we close our eyes never knowing where it will take us next.
I'm flat on the floor, with my head down low, where the sky can't rain on me anymore.
It's the wheel of the world - turning around.
I want to be inside your heaven.
But when you're standing at a crossroad, there's a choice you've got to make.
