Chappell Roan

Building an Identity in Missouri

Willard is a Missouri town of just over six thousand residents where religion carries more weight than ambition. Kayleigh Rose Amstutz spent her teenage years there playing piano and uploading covers to YouTube until a talent scout took her to Los Angeles.

In 2017, she released the EP School Nights under the name Chappell Roan.

It was a dark, dense pop sound that never quite fit onto the charts. The industry watched her with curiosity, but nobody really knew what to do with a young woman who blended Midwestern melancholy with a technical, operatic voice.

In 2020, record label Atlantic Records decided to terminate her contract after the release of Pink Pony Club.

It was a hard blow.

Chappell moved back to Missouri and took a job at a donut shop to get by while the industry turned its back on her. But the song began to gain traction organically on social media and streaming platforms with no advertising support.

So she decided to return to Los Angeles and work independently as a nanny to fund her own recordings.

Escaping Into Excess

The staging of her live shows draws directly on drag art and camp culture. Pop needed an excess that no one dared to offer at the time.

In 2023, she released her debut studio album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, under Island Records. The album took nearly a year to reach the top of global charts.

And the gamble paid off.

During 2024, the artist accumulated more than 40 million monthly listeners on Spotify thanks to the impact of the single Good Luck, Babe!. Her presence at festivals such as Coachella and Lollapalooza drew crowds that exceeded the capacity of the secondary stages.

But massive success brought media pressure that the artist publicly denounced on social media. In August 2024, Chappell Roan canceled several appearances at European festivals to prioritize her mental health after a summer of extreme exposure.

The noise became deafening.

Dan Nigro produces her tracks. He is the same producer who shaped the sound of Olivia Rodrigo and helped Roan find a balance between 80s synthesizers and heartbreaking ballads.

In September 2024, the Recording Industry Association of America certified the gold record for her debut album after it surpassed 500,000 units sold in the United States.
