Charles Melton was born in 1991 in Juneau, Alaska. During his teenage years in Manhattan, Kansas, American football took up all of his time. He played defense at Kansas State University (Division I) but decided to drop out of school and move to Los Angeles with 500 dollars in savings.
His first years in California were spent walking dogs and working construction while he looked for an opportunity. His looks opened the door to modeling for brands such as Dolce & Gabbana in 2012. But his real goal was acting, not the runways of Milan.
In 2014, he landed his first small role on the series Glee. It was a brief appearance that barely hinted at his dramatic ability. After several failed auditions of all kinds, he finally joined the cast of American Horror Story: Hotel in 2015.
The industry quickly typecast him.
In 2017, Melton's career took a major leap when he replaced Ross Butler on the series Riverdale. He played Reggie Mantle for more than 90 episodes and became a familiar face on teen television. The role brought him financial stability, but it also kept him within a very limited acting range.
His move into mainstream film came in 2019 with the romantic drama The Sun Is Also a Star. The movie grossed just 6.7 million dollars in the United States, and reviews were lukewarm. It seemed his fate would be that of so many actors who never manage to break out of the teen production circuit.
But Melton used that time to obsessively study art-house cinema. In 2020, he appeared in Bad Boys for Life as Rafe, a tech expert. It was a supporting role in a big-budget action blockbuster that allowed him to work on productions with budgets of 90 million dollars.
And then Todd Haynes arrived.
The year 2023 marked a complete turning point in his career. Melton was cast as Joe Yoo in May December alongside Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman. His performance as a man grappling with the aftermath of hidden childhood trauma beneath a normalized suburban life stunned international critics.
For this role, he had to gain 15 kilos and completely change his body language. Under the direction of Todd Haynes, Melton drew out an emotional restraint that no one expected after his time in fast-paced series. The result was a Golden Globe nomination in 2024 and the Gotham Award for Best Supporting Actor.
In 2024, the industry stopped seeing him as a model who acted and started treating him as a method actor. That recognition earned him a spot in the second season of Beef (2025) and in Alex Garland's new movie Warfare.
Their commitment to prestige cinema paid off.
Filming Warfare in 2024 required intensive military training on locations in the United Kingdom. Melton wrapped production on this war drama with a signed contract to star in Ray Mendoza's next project. The film has an estimated budget of 50 million dollars, and its release was scheduled for the 2025 calendar.
