Choi Byung-chan

Silence as a working tool

Choi Byung-chan stands 1.85 meters tall, and that height shaped his first steps in front of the camera.

In 2016 he debuted with the group VICTON, but his real ambition lay in visual storytelling more than in choreography. The training as a musical idol gave him a physical discipline that he later applied on film sets.

The stage was getting too small for him.

In 2020 he landed the role of Kim Yoo-shin in Live On. It was a quiet debut where the audience noticed his physique more than his dramatic ability. But for him it was his first real contact with the hierarchy of a television production.

The Korean industry often pigeonholes singers into flat supporting roles. But in 2021 the series The King’s Affection forced him to work with silence. He played Kim Ga-on, a bodyguard who barely spoke. That restrained physicality spared him the usual prejudices because it showed he knew how to hold a frame without needing dialogue.

And it worked.

From historical drama to office comedy

In 2022 he filmed Business Proposal, and his range changed completely. He put down the sword to play Shin Ha-min, the protagonist's younger brother. It was a supporting role with technical demands, where comedic timing was key to the success of his scenes.

Korean critics praised his chemistry with the rest of the cast. But the actor preferred to focus on the technique of fast-paced dialogue. His contract with IST Entertainment ended in April 2023, and that administrative move shaped his professional future.

He signed with New Way Company with a clear goal of prioritizing his career in film and television. This agency specializes in managing acting profiles, and it removed the music commitments from his schedule that had been limiting his availability for auditions.

It wasn't all red carpets. In 2019 he had to leave the show Produce X 101 due to chronic health problems with his Achilles tendon. That injury forced him to rethink his physical capacity for dance and accelerated his transition to scripted acting.

It was a decision forced by his body.

The mandatory military service break

On May 15, 2024, he entered the training center to fulfill his mandatory military service.

This break is a standard process for South Korean actors of his generation. By 2023 he had already closed several advertising deals to keep his image active during his absence. His return to civilian life is scheduled for late 2025 after he completes his duties as an active-duty soldier.

Filming for his last series before the break was done under strict confidentiality measures. So his career remains in administrative limbo until he regains his status as a civilian and can negotiate new production contracts.

His official profile lists a height of 185 centimeters and a weight of 70 kilograms at the start of his military training.
