Claire Foy was born in Stockport in 1984. She did not grow up in an artistic family or attend elite schools as a child. Her mother worked for a pharmaceutical company, and her father was a sales representative at a Rank Xerox office. She studied drama and film at Liverpool John Moores University before completing her training at the Oxford School of Drama in 2007.
Her first professional job was on British television in the series Being Human in 2008. It was a brief appearance. But that same year she landed the lead role in Little Dorrit, a BBC adaptation of Dickens. The project earned her a nomination at the RTS Awards and cemented her place in British period drama.
And the bet on realism paid off.
In the years that followed, she avoided being typecast by taking supporting roles in film and television. In 2011 she appeared in Season of the Witch alongside Nicolas Cage. It was a big-budget production that did not win over critics. Foy quickly returned to the stage and to small-scale British productions to regain control of her acting profile.
In 2015, she played Anne Boleyn in the miniseries Wolf Hall. Her performance blended ambition with restrained vulnerability. This role caught the attention of Peter Morgan. The screenwriter was looking for someone who could convey authority without grand gestures for his new project about the British monarchy.
Foy signed on to star in The Crown in 2016. She played Queen Elizabeth II across the first two seasons of the series. She won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for this role. However, her professional recognition came with a financial controversy that made international headlines in 2018. It was made public that she was paid less than her co-star Matt Smith.
The pay gap between the lead actors was thousands of pounds per episode.
Following this episode, production company Left Bank Pictures publicly apologized, and Foy became a leading voice on equality on film sets. However, she chose not to get stuck in the political debate and focused on her full transition into the Hollywood industry. In 2018 she shot First Man under director Damien Chazelle, playing Janet Shearon, Neil Armstrong’s wife.
That same year, 2018, she took on the challenge of replacing Rooney Mara and Noomi Rapace in the role of Lisbeth Salander. The film The Girl in the Spider's Web aimed to reboot the franchise based on Stieg Larsson's novels. The film grossed 35 million dollars against a budget of 43 million. The commercial result was lukewarm, and critics noted that the script did not match Foy's physical performance.
But a box office stumble did not slow her work pace.
In 2021 she starred in the miniseries A Very British Scandal, bringing Margaret Campbell, the Duchess of Argyll, to life. The project focused on the most high-profile divorce in the UK in the 1960s. Foy drew on her talent for psychological drama to portray the institutional misogyny of the era. She avoided playing the character as a victim and opted for a raw performance.
In 2022, she was part of the ensemble cast of Women Talking directed by Sarah Polley. The film was shot almost entirely in a barn and relied entirely on the power of its dialogue. In 2023, she premiered All of Us Strangers alongside Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal. In this fantasy drama, she played a mother who appears in the memories and visions of the protagonist years after her death.
Foy keeps her home in London and chooses her projects based on the quality of the script. Her salary per production is currently estimated in the seven-figure range. Filming for her movies usually spans an average of twelve weeks of actual work on set.
