Connie Nielsen arrived in New York with little more than a suitcase and a command of six languages. She had spent her teenage years on her mother's revue stages in Denmark and worked as a model in Paris and Italy. But her first big break in the American industry came in 1997. In Pactar con el diablo, she played Christabella Andreoli with a coldness that disarmed casting directors.
She landed the role after an audition where she faked a perfect Italian accent.
The actress proved she could hold her gaze against Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves without blinking. That supernatural thriller grossed more than 220 million dollars and opened the doors of major studios to her. Before turning thirty, she already knew her Nordic look could be a double-edged sword in an industry obsessed with labels.
Ridley Scott was looking for a regal presence for Gladiator in the year 2000. Nielsen played Lucilla, bringing a restraint that balanced the testosterone-fueled display of Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. That 103-million-dollar production overnight transformed her professional status.
And the phone didn't stop ringing.
In 2002, she shot Portraits of an Obsession alongside Robin Williams. It was a bet on independent film that drew her away from conventional projects for a time. Nielsen always preferred characters with moral cracks over the flat, by-the-book heroines. Her choices sought stories where silence mattered as much as dialogue.
She returned to her native Denmark in 2004 to star in Brothers, directed by Susanne Bier. She won the Best Actress award at the San Sebastián Film Festival for her role as Sarah. That performance on the trauma of war worked just as well without the special-effects spectacle of California.
Hollywood came knocking again with the rise of comic book adaptations. In 2017, she took on the role of Queen Hippolyta in Wonder Woman. She reprised the character in Justice League by Zack Snyder in 2021 and in the Amazon queen's sequel a year earlier. These roles demand Spartan physical preparation and long training days with swords.
But the actress never left European art-house cinema.
In 2013, she appeared in Nymphomaniac by Lars von Trier, taking on risks few stars of her stature would accept. Her career moves between that constant duality of mainstream cinema and experimental projects. So she alternates big Warner Bros productions with intimate dramas shot in Denmark or France.
In 2021, she appeared in the action film Nobody alongside Bob Odenkirk. It was a 16 million dollar production that performed very well at the box office thanks to word of mouth. The actress kept a low profile during the promotion of her television work, such as the series I Am the Night from 2019.
Her lap around the Colosseum wrapped up in 2024.
She took part in the shoot of Gladiator II, reprising her role as Lucilla two decades later. The sequel, directed by Ridley Scott, had an estimated budget of 250 million dollars. The contract included specific clauses on the use of animals at the locations in Morocco and Malta.
