Buenos Aires doesn't hand anything over to celebrity kids. Diego Torres grew up surrounded by music in the family living room, but chose to make his acting debut under Ricardo Darín in the play Pájaros in the nait in 1990. That production didn't last long on stage.
Their real breakthrough in front of the cameras came the following year with La banda del Golden Rocket. The series drew millions of viewers to their TVs every week between 1991 and 1993. Torres shared the screen with Adrián Suar and Fabián Vena while driving that old yellow Oldsmobile through the streets of Buenos Aires.
Audiences immediately embraced the character.
In 1994, director Héctor Olivera gave him a supporting role in Una sombra ya pronto serás, the film adaptation of Osvaldo Soriano's novel. It was his first serious brush with the big screen.
In 1997, director Juan Bautista Stagnaro cast him as Marcos Lombardi in the prison drama La furia. The film follows a young man wrongly jailed who ends up caught in a violent riot inside a prison in southern Argentina. Torres shared scenes with Rodolfo Ranni and Laura Novoa during a harsh, cold shoot.
The film sold more than 1.3 million tickets in Argentine theaters, outperforming most of the big American blockbusters that competed at the box office that season.
His film career was put on hold for fifteen years.
Because the music industry allows no distractions. After the commercial explosion of his songs across Latin America and Spain, recording commitments and sold-out concerts took up all of his free time.
In 2012, he broke his film drought by starring in Extraños en la noche, a comedy directed by Alejandro Montiel. But it was three years later that he found a project with real dramatic depth in Papeles en el viento.
Juan Taratuto's film adapted Eduardo Sacheri's novel about friendship and grief. Torres played one of three friends trying to recover the money their late companion had invested in buying the contract of a mediocre soccer player. The story worked by blending Buenos Aires melancholy with the rogue-like hustle of sports dealmaking.
In 2017, he formed a comedy trio with Santiago Segura and Diego Peretti in Casi leyendas, directed by Gabriel Nesci. The film told the story of a rock band reuniting decades after their breakup, hoping for a second chance three decades later.
The production had a two-million-dollar budget funded by companies in Madrid and Buenos Aires. The shoot mixed live-action scenes with dark humor about the midlife crisis.
So the actor kept landing comedic roles without leaving the screen. In 2018, he played Gabriel in Re loca, a comedy directed by Martino Zaidelis and starring Natalia Oreiro.
In 2023, he joined the cast of Dime lo que quieres (de verdad), an adaptation directed by Bruno Ascenzo that focuses on the romantic conflicts of two couples. Filming wrapped in just twenty-four working days on location in Mexico City, and the film went straight to streaming platforms without a theatrical release.
