Donald Glover

Donald Glover was born on an Air Force base in California in 1983. He grew up in Stone Mountain, Georgia, a place where the Ku Klux Klan still held parades down the main streets when he was a child. That reality shaped his understanding of comedy and drama from the time he began writing his first sketches at New York University.

Tina Fey brought him onto the writing team for 30 Rock when Glover was only 23 years old. He was still living in campus dorms and balancing scripts for a national series with his work at an online comedy collective called Derrick Comedy. But he badly wanted to be in front of the camera.

In 2009 he landed the role of Troy Barnes in the comedy Community. What began as the stereotype of a high school jock became the emotional heart of the show. Glover improvised half of his lines and pushed the writers to rewrite scenes to fit his comedic rhythm.

He walked away from a massively successful series in its fifth season to create something no one in the industry understood.

His exit from conventional television coincided with the launch of his music career under the alias Childish Gambino. The name came from a random name generator on the Wu-Tang Clan website. His early work got lukewarm reviews on music blogs, but he kept releasing material obsessively.

The risk of surreal television

FX gave him a blank check in 2016 to produce Atlanta. Glover insisted on one non-negotiable condition: the writers' room had to be made up exclusively of Black people. It was a logistical decision meant to protect the authenticity of a story that blended gritty realism with pure surrealism.

On the show, he played a small-time manager trying to survive in the trap music industry. The project worked because it didn't try to explain Black culture to white audiences. It simply existed.

The first season of the series won two Emmy Awards. Glover became the first Black director to win the award for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series in the history of the awards. But success didn't keep him in one lane.

Total control is his only bargaining chip.

In 2018 he released the music video for This Is America while hosting Saturday Night Live. The video racked up 100 million views in just one week. It examined gun violence and systemic racism through a frenzied choreography that went viral within hours.

Multimillion-dollar contracts and the end of an era

Disney called him to play Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018. Filming was a complicated process with directors changing midway through production. The movie fell short of its box office expectations, but his performance was the most praised by international critics.

And then he decided his time as a musician had an expiration date, because he didn't want to repeat himself. So in 2021 he signed an eight-figure deal with Amazon Studios to develop new original projects under his own production label.

In 2024 he premiered the series Mr. & Mrs. Smith as its creator and star. He wasn't trying to imitate the original action film; instead, he set out to explore the loneliness and bureaucracy of modern relationships. The budget for each episode topped 10 million dollars.

During that same period, he announced his farewell tour under the title The New World Tour. Childish Gambino's final album was designed as the soundtrack to a film he directed himself, titled Bando Stone and the New World. Distribution rights to his work are now managed through Gilga, his own creative consultancy based on a farm in California.
