Mali Finn found him at the entrance of a youth club in Pasadena in 1990. The kid wasn't looking for work, but he had that abandoned-puppy stare and leather jacket James Cameron needed to save humanity's future in the story. He was thirteen and had no prior acting training.
And fate gave him the role of John Connor.
The production of Terminator 2: Judgment Day cost around one hundred million dollars. The kid earned thirty thousand. After its release in 1991, his face was on the folders of schools across half the world, and his name appeared in advertising contracts for brands such as Calvin Klein. Edward Furlong didn't choose to become an actor; the system swallowed him up because he fit the mold of the nineties rebel.
In 1998 he filmed American History X alongside Edward Norton. His performance as Danny Vinyard proved that his talent was no casting accident or matter of luck. But the Los Angeles industry tends to be relentless with teenagers who lack a stable environment. During the shoot of Pecker that same year, the first behavior problems on set were already leaking out.
Because the money arrived long before emotional maturity.
The producers of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines decided to let him go in 2002 because of his substance problems. Nick Stahl took his place in the franchise. That cost him a financial and professional setback from which he never fully recovered (he lost a multimillion-dollar contract that would have secured his retirement before thirty).
He spent years taking on one low-budget project after another that went straight to home video. In 2011 he appeared in The Reunion and took part in five episodes of the series CSI: NY. His physical appearance changed dramatically, and the tabloid press focused more on his stays at rehab centers than on his acting ability.
And his bet on independent film didn't always pay off.
In 2019, James Cameron digitally recreated his face for a brief sequence in Terminator: Dark Fate. It was motion capture performed over another actor to recreate his teenage version. He later appeared in the horror film The Forest Hills, shot in 2023 under the direction of Scott Hansen.
The film's total budget didn't even reach five million dollars.
