Eita Nagayama decided to reclaim his full family name on January 1, 2020. He had spent two decades working under the stage name Eita, and the change was not a matter of aesthetic whim. It was a statement of intent, marking a new phase in which the weight of his lineage no longer weighed on him in the credits. The actor started out as a model in the late nineties, but his ambition was always on the film set.
His first big break came in 2003 with the series Water Boys. At the time, the Japanese industry was looking for fresh faces for youth dramas, and he fit the profile. But Nagayama didn't want to settle into the cliché of the athletic teen who smiles at the camera. He preferred to take risks with supporting roles that let him watch veteran actors up close.
And the strategy paid off.
In 2004, he appeared in Orange Days, and his presence soon became essential in any quality production on Fuji TV. Casting directors noticed that he had an unusual gaze (capable of conveying either absolute calm or violent tension in seconds). He's not an actor who needs to shout to fill the frame.
The real turning point came in 2008 with Last Friends. He played Takeru, a makeup artist with deep trauma who avoided physical contact. It was a complex role in a series that tackled taboo subjects for Japanese television, such as domestic violence and gender identity. It drew an average audience of 17.7%, and his performance earned him the respect of even the toughest critics.
From then on, his career became unpredictable. He worked with cult directors and took on projects that other actors of his generation turned down for fear of damaging their commercial image. That's because Nagayama cares more about the process than the box office results.
Nobody expected his transformation.
In 2013, he starred in Saikou no Rikon (The Best Divorce). Here he showed that he could handle neurotic comedy with the same precision as social drama. His character was an obsessive and somewhat unbearable man, yet he made viewers empathize with his quirks. The series became a cult favorite that screenwriting schools still study today for its sharp dialogue.
The year 2023 marked his definitive entry into the circuit of major international film festivals. In Monster (directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda), he played Professor Hori. It is a role that demands extreme restraint, since the film plays with different points of view on the same school incident. The film won the Best Screenplay award at Cannes, and much of that success came from the ambiguity Nagayama brought to his character.
But the actor doesn't limit himself to prestige films. In 2023, he also starred in the sci-fi series Toki o Kakeru na, Koibito-tachi. He enjoys jumping between genres because he sees acting as constant training. So he alternates big-budget productions with independent projects where the paycheck is the least of his concerns.
Taking risks is his main driving force.
In 2024, he joined the cast of Dear Family to play a cardiologist in a story based on real events about the creation of an artificial heart. For this role, he had to learn complex medical terminology and spend hours observing real surgical procedures. Filming took place mainly in locations in Aichi Prefecture with a crew of more than sixty people.
