Ekaterina Kuznetsova landed in Madrid with a suitcase and a career derailed by geopolitics.
The daughter of Oleg Kuznetsov, a Ukrainian football legend who played for Dynamo Kyiv and Glasgow Rangers, she grew up under a discipline that had little to do with the spotlight. Before stepping onto a set, she studied classical singing at the conservatory. But acting crossed her path in 2004, when she enrolled at the National University of Theatre, Film and Television in her hometown.
Her first steps in the industry were low-key. In 2006, she landed a supporting role in the series The Angel from Orly. That Ukrainian-Russian production marked the start of a steady bridge between Kyiv and Moscow that would define her career for nearly two decades.
The decision was final.
In 2012, Kuznetsova's life changed dramatically when she joined the series Kukhnya. She played Sasha, a spirited waitress in a comedy that drew millions of viewers across the region. The shoot for this series lasted for years, making her one of the most recognizable faces on television.
She worked tirelessly on projects such as Anka from Moldavanka in 2015 and The Madman’s Smile. Her ability to shift between genres let her move from period drama to light comedy without losing audience favor. But the heavy workload in Russia forced her to settle in Moscow, far from her family in Ukraine.
And the gamble paid off.
During that period, she took part in more than 30 audiovisual productions with big budgets. Producers wanted her because her name guaranteed an instant connection with young viewers. In 2021, she starred in Vampiry sredney polosy, an urban fantasy series in which she played a police investigator hiding a supernatural nature.
On February 24, 2022, Kuznetsova was on vacation in Tenerife. The Russian invasion of Ukraine broke out while she was on Spanish soil, and her reaction was immediate. She decided not to return to Moscow despite having signed contracts and a newly renovated home in the Russian capital.
Nobody expected that silence.
That stance had direct consequences for her finances and her career. She withdrew from the second season of Vampiry sredney polosy and was replaced by another actress through post-production techniques. In 2022, she publicly stated that she would never again work in a country that attacked her homeland.
After leaving Russia, she temporarily settled in Warsaw and later in Spain to rebuild her network of contacts. In 2023, she focused on dubbing projects and on managing her public image through digital channels, moving away from the major state studios that had previously funded her.
In 2024, the actress maintains her residence outside the conflict zone and has sold all of her real estate holdings in Russian territory. Her profile with European talent agencies now highlights her command of Ukrainian, Russian, and English for international co-production projects. Ending her contract with the platform Start cost her an estimated loss of several hundred thousand euros.
