Erin Doherty auditioned for The Crown in 2018 without realizing her life was about to change over a single jaw movement. She wasn't trying to imitate Princess Anne of England, but to find the exact point of tension in her neck. She spent months studying footage from the 1970s because she needed to understand why this woman spoke as if she were always about to bite someone.
In 2019, audiences discovered an actress who didn't ask permission to enter a scene. Her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II's daughter avoided all the cheap tricks of parody. The British press started asking where this girl from Crawley had come from, the one who stole every scene from Olivia Colman with just two short lines and a look of contempt.
Her training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School was her real home base. There she learned that theater is an exercise in physical endurance. In 2015, she finished her studies and began landing small TV roles, such as in the series Call the Midwife in 2017. But theater remained her main refuge.
And the gamble paid off.
Many actors would have been stuck in the aristocrat mold after the success of 2020. But Doherty chose to break out of it right away. In 2022, she took the lead role in the BBC and Amazon Prime Video series Chloe. She played Becky Green, a social media-obsessed woman who infiltrates a life that isn't hers.
It was a stark, violent change of register. Becky had nothing to do with royal security. She was a broken character, full of lies and with an anxiety that jumped right off the screen. In 2022, international critics confirmed that her ability to sustain psychological suspense was above the average of her generation.
Doherty prefers to work outside her comfort zone. She says that if a script doesn't scare her, she'd rather stay home and read. That's why she chooses projects where silence says more than long dialogue. So her move into period films with a political backdrop was a logical step in her career.
There's no room for error.
In 2023, she appeared in the film Firebrand, playing Anne Askew. She shared the set with Alicia Vikander and Jude Law under the direction of Karim Aïnouz. The story centered on the last wife of Henry VIII, and Doherty brought a fervent religious intensity that provided the perfect counterpoint to the decay of the Tudor court.
In 2024, she returned to film with Reawakening, a drama directed by Virginia Gilbert. She played a daughter who comes home after being missing for ten years. The shoot demanded extreme emotional restraint, because the plot revolved around her parents' constant doubt about her true identity. It was a low-budget production that relied entirely on her physical expressiveness.
But the big leap into large-scale production came when she joined the Disney+ series A Thousand Blows in 2025. Written by Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders, the series is set in the dangerous world of illegal boxing in Victorian London. Doherty plays Mary Carr, the leader of a criminal gang of women known as the Forty Elephants.
This 2025 project marks her return to roles with physical authority and command. The production designed specific costumes to make the street-fight scenes easier to shoot. Doherty spent months training to build muscle and learn period combat techniques.
Everything is measured to the millimeter.
Despite her media exposure, she still lives a low-key life outside London's celebrity circles. In 2025, her name appeared on lists of the most bankable actresses for productions aiming for gritty realism. Her contract with the representation agency United Agents now covers projects that stretch through the end of the decade.
