Esra Bilgiç had no prior experience in front of the camera when she joined the set of Diriliş: Ertuğrul in 2014. She was 22 years old and studying International Relations in Ankara. That first audition landed her the role of Halime Hatun, a character who kept her busy for four full seasons.
It was an explosive start.
The series was sold to dozens of countries and sparked a massive fan following in places like Pakistan. But the actress decided to leave the project in 2018 to pursue other kinds of roles. She wanted to avoid being typecast in period historical drama and the limits of a script that no longer offered her any challenge.
In 2019, she tried her luck with Bir Umut Yeter. The show didn't make it past a few episodes due to low ratings and was abruptly canceled. It was her first taste of how fragile the Turkish television industry can be and the weight of live audience ratings.
And she learned quickly from that stumble.
Her shift in genre came in 2020 with Ramo. She played Sibel, a lawyer caught in a mob war in the city of Adana. It was a physically demanding shoot that stretched into 2021 across the outlying neighborhoods of Istanbul.
During those months, the actress juggled filming schedules with her law studies at Marmara University. Bilgiç has always kept one foot off the set to make sure her education stays separate from the spotlight. Before studying law, she had already attended archaeology classes at Hacettepe University.
In 2021, she starred in Kanunsuz Topraklar, a story set in the coal mines of Zonguldak during the 1930s. The production spent millions of lira recreating the era, but the series ended after 16 episodes due to the high maintenance costs of the set.
So the actress decided to move toward shorter, more controlled formats.
The streaming industry came knocking in 2023 with the release of Atatürk. In this production she played Madame Corinne, a key role in the story of the founder of modern Turkey. The project was originally conceived as a series for Disney Plus, though it ended up becoming a two-part feature film.
In 2024, she signed with Netflix for the film Romantik Hırsız. She shared the spotlight with Birkan Sokullu in a plot involving art heists and international chases across Europe. The film reached the platform's global top 10 during its first week of release.
The global market was no longer an option but a reality.
By 2025, she had wrapped her role in the series Zamanın Kapıları, made for the TOD platform. The contract called for controlled shooting schedules and direct distribution in Middle Eastern and Maghreb markets. The actress finished filming her scenes in Istanbul after completing a block of ten episodes on a fixed post-production budget.
