Evan Roderick hung up the hockey stick at 19 years old to make a living on Vancouver sets. He had a sports scholarship and a promising future in the BCHL with the West Kelowna Warriors. But he preferred the risk of auditions to racking up more minutes on the ice.
It was a decision made purely on instinct.
After leaving sports, he sought professional training at local acting schools. He didn't want to be just an athletic face looking for commercial work. And the industry responded quickly. In 2017, he landed the role of Officer Nick Anastas on the series Arrow (The CW), where he worked recurringly for two years.
That shoot was his real film school. There he learned to move between large-format cameras and to understand the downtime of a high-budget production. He shot more than ten episodes of one of the most profitable franchises on American television that decade.
The ice returned to his life in the most unexpected way in 2019. Netflix cast him to star in Spinning Out alongside Kaya Scodelario. He played Justin Davis, a figure skater with discipline problems who needed a partner to reach the Olympic level.
For this project, he had to train intensely for weeks. Although he knew how to skate from his years as a hockey player, figure skating demanded a different kind of body control. Here, aesthetics mattered more than brute force and collisions.
And the gamble paid off.
The series premiered in early 2020 and gave him international visibility he hadn't had until then. But the platform decided not to renew the show for a second season. It was a sharp blow for the production team that left Roderick looking for new horizons beyond teen drama.
In 2022, he starred in A Tale of Two Christmases for Hallmark Channel. This move into cable TV movies gave him steady work. He then started taking on suspense and romance projects one after another with almost mechanical efficiency.
In 2023, he made a complete change of pace with the miniseries V.C. Andrews’ Dawn. In this production, he played Ormand Longchamp in a story full of family secrets and dark twists. It was a role that demanded far more dramatic weight than his earlier romantic comedy parts.
That same year, she joined the The Cases of Mystery Lane franchise, playing Alden Case. The formula of these movies is built on solving crimes with a touch of light comedy. It's a format that works very well in the U.S. and Canadian home market.
In 2024, production on The Cases of Mystery Lane: Death is Listening wrapped his final scenes in locations in British Columbia, directed by Mike Rohl.
