The weight of a Welsh gaze

Eve Myles nearly took up boxing before acting came into her life. That youthful discipline left a clear mark on the way she moves in front of the camera. Because Myles doesn't act with her voice alone. She works with a physical tension that recalls someone waiting for a punch in the ring.

She studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and graduated in 2000. After working in theater productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company, she began to gain ground on British television. Her first long-running role was in Belonging, where she played Ceri Lewis between 2000 and 2009.

Gwen Cooper was not your typical heroine.

Russell T Davies became fascinated with her in 2005 after seeing her in an episode of Doctor Who. He decided she should lead the franchise's first major spin-off. In 2006, Torchwood was born, and Myles stepped into the shoes of Gwen Cooper for four seasons. Her character served as the moral anchor of a team fighting alien threats in Cardiff.

It was a period of massive exposure that ended in 2011 with a co-production with the American network Starz. But Myles never wanted to move to Los Angeles permanently. She preferred to stay rooted in Wales and choose projects that allowed her to explore less explosive roles.

2017's bilingual experiment

In 2017, she took on the most demanding challenge of her career with the series Keeping Faith. The show was filmed in two languages at the same time. She recorded each scene in Welsh under the title Un Bore Mercher and then immediately repeated the same takes in English. Shooting two different series at the same time took a physical toll that the actress has mentioned in several technical interviews about her craft.

The show's audience success was unexpected and massive. Myles's image in her yellow raincoat under the Welsh rain became a visual reference across the United Kingdom. In 2018, the series reached 9.5 million views on the BBC iPlayer. It was the most-watched non-network drama in the service's history.

And the bet on the local language paid off.

Before filming the second season in 2019, Myles had already taken part in other prestigious projects such as Broadchurch and Victoria. In the latter, she played Mrs. Jenkins in 2016. Her ability to move from extreme vulnerability to absolute toughness kept her on the radar of London casting directors.

Million-dollar budgets and air traffic control

In 2020, she starred in We Hunt Together. The psychological thriller let her play with the moral ambiguity of a detective pursuing a pair of killers. The series had a second installment in 2022, where Myles delved deeper into her character's personal traumas. The leap to major global streaming platforms came shortly after.

In 2023, she joined the cast of Hijack for Apple TV. She played Alice Sinclair, an air traffic controller trying to manage the hijacking of a plane from her ground control post. She shared the bill with Idris Elba in a production built on real-time tension. The series racked up millions of viewing hours worldwide during its first month on air.

Myles filmed nearly all of her scenes for 2023 on a closed set.

Despite her international profile, she still lives in Cardiff. She is married to actor Bradley Freegard, with whom she has shared the screen on several occasions. They have three daughters, and Myles often says her priority is family stability over red carpets. In 2021, she finished filming the third season of her most successful legal drama and has since focused on more selective projects.

She stays away from the tabloid spotlight and manages her career through an agency in London. In 2024, her name is still linked to technically sophisticated productions in the United Kingdom. The official viewership figure for her biggest bilingual hit remains the audience benchmark for Welsh television.
