Forrie J. Smith isn't a method actor who spent three months at a cowboy camp to prepare for a role. He grew up in Montana among spurs and real mud. His grandfather and father already made a living on the rodeo circuit, and he simply followed the family trail. For Smith, acting was never an early calling but an extension of his work on the land.
Movies were a necessary accident.
In 1987, he started working as a stuntman in Hollywood. He didn't chase the spotlight and preferred the paycheck that covered the bills on his ranch. He worked on Rambo III and Tombstone, but always from the shadows of the action double. For decades he fell off horses and took hits so others could keep a clean face in front of the camera. He racked up more than 30 years of hands-on experience before someone asked him to deliver a full line on screen.
But his face, weathered by rodeo sun, eventually caught the attention of casting directors. He had the look of a man who had slept under the stars more nights than in a hotel bed. So he stopped being just the guy who fell off horses and started being the guy who gave orders from above.
Taylor Sheridan already knew him well from the horse circuits. The creator of Yellowstone needed authenticity and called Smith to play Lloyd Pierce in 2018. What started as a role with a few lines ended up taking a central place on the Dutton ranch. And audiences quickly sensed that Smith wasn't acting but was simply there.
On set, he didn't need wardrobe advisors. He often wore his own shirts and hats, because the production team realized nothing beat clothing that already bore the wear of real use. That natural ease let him hold his own against top actors without ever having set foot in an acting school.
And the gamble paid off.
Despite his late fame, Smith kept his residence in New Mexico. He never moved to Los Angeles or joined the industry's social circles. He preferred to keep raising horses and taking part in charity events tied to the rodeo world. Because his identity is rooted in the land, not the red carpet.
In 2022, he launched his own bourbon brand in partnership with Oak & Eden. It wasn't an empty marketing move. He got involved in the distilling process, insisting that the product reflect the toughness of his lifestyle. But commercial success didn't soften his blunt manner or his tendency to say exactly what he thinks, without diplomatic filters.
His departure from the series that made him world famous was surrounded by media noise. In 2024, it was confirmed that he would not take part in the final episodes of Yellowstone due to disagreements that were never fully explained in public. But Smith didn't seem to mind much about closing that chapter of his career.
Smith still prefers the quiet of his ranch.
His filmography includes titles such as Hell or High Water and Better Call Saul, where his appearances are brief but memorable. He doesn't seek top billing or critics' awards. He simply shows up, does his part, and returns to his animals. His contract with the Oak & Eden brand remains in effect and generates annual distribution of thousands of bottles across the U.S. market.
In 2024, Smith registered an additional farm property to expand his ranching operations. Filming of the fifth season of his main series wrapped without him during the final days of production.
