Gale Harold was born in Decatur in 1969. He grew up in a strict religious environment that he escaped at age fifteen. Before becoming an actor, he worked as a motorcycle mechanic and studied photography in San Francisco. But Susan Landau convinced him to try acting after seeing his potential in a theater workshop.
In 1997, he moved to Los Angeles to train in the conservatory program at A Noise Within. There he made his stage debut in Me and My Friends. But his life changed when he received a call about a cable television project that was looking for unknown faces.
There was no turning back.
In 2000, Queer as Folk premiered on Showtime. Harold played Brian Kinney, a cynical ad executive allergic to commitment. The character didn't seek the audience's approval, and that brutal honesty is what kept the series on the air for five seasons until 2005.
And the gamble paid off.
During that time, he made independent films such as Particles of Truth in 2003 or Rhinoceros Eyes that same year. But television remained his main showcase. He appeared in Deadwood and had guest roles on Grey’s Anatomy, playing a paramedic with extreme political convictions.
In October 2008, he suffered a serious motorcycle accident that left him with a shoulder fracture and a brain injury. He had to temporarily leave his role on Desperate Housewives, where he played Jackson Braddock. His recovery was slow, but he returned to work in 2009 to fulfill his contract commitments.
Theater saved him from being typecast.
Because on stage he found the challenges that commercial television denied him. In 2010, he starred in Tennessee Williams' Orpheus Descending in Los Angeles. Later, in 2011, he joined the cast of the series The Secret Circle. Although the series lasted only one season, it gave him the chance to play a villain with dark nuances.
In 2020, he took part in the documentary series Equal, bringing Howard Smith to life. Two years later, in 2022, he worked on the film Good Girl Jane under the direction of Sarah Elizabeth Mintz. In August 2025, he attended the 25th anniversary reunion of Queer as Folk in Los Angeles alongside the rest of the original cast.
His filmography in 2025 includes more than fifty professional credits across productions of all budget sizes.
