Gary Grimes made his mark on movie history by way of shyness. His performance as Hermie in Summer of '42 (1971) connected with audiences looking for refuge in melancholy. He was no typical leading man. He had the fragility needed for viewers to see themselves in his awkward, hormone-driven doubts.
And the gamble paid off.
The film grossed more than 32 million dollars at the U.S. box office on a minimal budget. That explosive success earned him a Golden Globe nomination and a BAFTA nomination. But Grimes never seemed comfortable under the Los Angeles spotlight.
After the impact of his debut, the actor sought projects that would move him away from the cliché of the sensitive teenager. In 1972 he shared the screen with John Wayne in The Cowboys. Wayne was tough on young actors, but Grimes earned his respect during the shoot in the Arizona landscapes.
They reunited on screen in 1973 for The Hanging Tree. At this stage, Grimes showed he could carry a western without breaking a sweat. But the genre was changing, and the studio system was starting to look the other way.
He tried to recapture the magic of his beginnings with Class of 44 in 1973. It was a sequel that failed to capture the atmosphere of the original film. Audiences were already on a different wavelength, and the nostalgia wore off fast.
Movies were no longer a priority for him.
Unlike many actors of his generation, Grimes did not fight to stay at the top at any cost. In 1976, he appeared in Gus, a Disney production about a donkey who played soccer. That was a long way from the artistic ambitions of his early years in the industry.
His appearances became sporadic and less significant over the years. He took part in a few TV series episodes to fulfill contracts. In 1983 he appeared in the series Matt Houston and decided that would be his last credit in front of the camera.
He preferred an anonymous life devoted to his family and other interests, far from film sets. He turned down scripts and interview requests for decades. He settled in the Los Angeles area but under a radar of complete discretion that he maintains to this day.
His last credited appearance on the small screen was in 1983.
