Geeta Agrawal Sharma doesn't appear on the neon signs of Mumbai's major avenues, but she keeps the pulse of the most raw scenes in commercial Indian cinema. Her name began to gain strength in international circles when in 2016 she played Daya Kaur in Dangal. That film about wrestling broke the global box office with earnings of more than 300 million dollars.
She was the mother who balanced the protagonist's sternness.
Before moving into film studios, she spent years training in Delhi's theater scene. It was on stage that she learned to use silence as a working tool. At the start of her career, she wasn't chasing quick fame or big advertising contracts.
And that patience paid off.
Casting directors often call her for characters who act as the moral backbone of the plot. But she always avoids the cliché of the long-suffering mother without nuance. In 2019, she took part in Chhichhore and once again showed that her physical presence fills the frame even with only a few minutes of dialogue.
The expansion of streaming platforms in India changed her career path. In 2020, she joined the cast of Aarya to play Sheeba over several seasons. She worked under the direction of Ram Madhvani in a shooting environment much closer to auteur cinema than to the mass industry.
That was when global audiences started to recognize her face.
She has no fear of physically demanding shoots or of lower-class characters. In 2023, she filmed 12th Fail with director Vidhu Vinod Chopra. She played the protagonist's mother in a story about poverty and academic ambition that became the year's surprise phenomenon. The film multiplied its initial budget by ten at the domestic box office alone.
In 2024, she premiered Laapataa Ladies, produced by Aamir Khan. She plays Yashoda, and critics praised her ability to portray rural life without slipping into caricature. She arrives on set with her script memorized and a clearly defined approach to physical movement.
But her schedule isn't limited to social dramas.
That same year, she took part in the horror film Munjya and the espionage series Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond. Her value in the character actor market has risen by 40 percent since the end of the pandemic. Producers value her discipline and the absence of star demands during shoot days.
In 2024, her role in the Netflix series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack solidified her presence in high-budget technical projects. Filming of her scenes was completed in a block of twelve intensive workdays.
