Gong Ji-cheol chose his stage name by combining his father's and mother's surnames. He debuted in the series School 4 in 2001, and during his early years in the Korean industry he went largely unnoticed as just another model trying his luck in acting.

Everything changed with the premiere of The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince in 2007. That role as a wealthy heir who falls for a girl disguised as a boy brought him a fame he still struggled to come to terms with. But just as his face was on every billboard in Seoul, he had to complete his mandatory military service.

And the gamble paid off.

The Unexpected Activist

During his military service, he read the novel The Crucible by Gong Ji-young and became obsessed with adapting it for the big screen. The film was titled Silenced and hit theaters in 2011. It was not an easy commercial product, since it exposed real abuse at a school for deaf children.

Got the South Korean government to pass the Dogani Law to toughen penalties for child sex crimes. Few actors manage to get their work to change a country's criminal code so directly.

In 2016, he strung together three hits that placed him in a different league. First, he starred in Train to Busan, a zombie film that grossed more than 98 million dollars worldwide and broke the prejudices against Asian genre cinema.

That same year, he premiered The Age of Shadows and wrapped up the cycle with Guardian: The Lonely and Great God. This TV series reached a 18.6% audience share in South Korea. And he did it playing an immortal being weary of life.

Managing the Silence

Unlike other stars, he doesn't pile up projects out of fear of being forgotten. He often goes long stretches without filming anything, preferring the anonymity of his home or deep-sea fishing. In 2021, he took a supporting role in Squid Game. He only needed a couple of slaps and an invitation to play for Western audiences to start wondering who that man in the gray suit was.

That same year, she starred in The Silent Sea, an eight-episode space production whose production design went beyond its 20 million dollar budget.

He knows how to pick his battles.

In 2024, he returned to the big screen with the film Wonderland and led the cast of the series The Trunk for Netflix. In the latter, he plays a music producer trapped in a contract marriage who gets caught up in a police mystery after a suitcase is found on the shore of a lake.

His participation in the second season of Squid Game was confirmed for late 2024. Producers kept the details of his storyline under lock and key to prevent leaks before the global premiere on the streaming platform.

Gong Yoo has held an advertising contract with the luxury fashion house Chanel since 2021. His agency is Management SOOP, which manages his appearances with tight control over his private image.
