Growing up on big-budget film sets often shapes the creative outlook of any artist.
Gracie Abrams was born in Los Angeles in 1999 with a surname tied to the biggest productions of modern Hollywood. Her father is filmmaker J.J. Abrams and her mother is producer Katie McGrath. Any step she took in the cultural industry risked being labeled with the stigma of family privilege. But she preferred to lock herself in her room with a piano, a guitar and a notebook to write bare-bones songs that she posted online without any middlemen.
In 2018, she began studying international relations at Barnard College in New York. Her academic experience lasted just over a school year. The need to write music full-time outweighed any diplomatic plans, leading to her record deal with Interscope Records before she turned twenty.
The music took the lead.
In 2019 she released her first single, Mean It, followed in 2020 by the EP Minor. The songs drew attention for their spare production by Blake Slatkin, where whispers and stories of youthful disillusionment replaced the big fanfares of commercial radio pop. In 2021 she delivered a second short project, This Is What It Feels Like, but her real sonic leap was born in the woods of New York State.
There, she locked herself away with Aaron Dessner, a member of The National, at the legendary Long Pond studio. Dessner sensed that Abrams' appeal lay in intimate detail and raw acoustic textures that weren't overpolished. In February 2023, her debut album, Good Riddance, came out: twelve tracks dominated by wooden guitars, subtle synths and confessions about romantic guilt.
That debut earned her a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 2024, standing up against the industry's big promotional machines.
And the formula worked flawlessly.
In 2023 and 2024, Abrams was picked by Taylor Swift as the headline opener for dozens of stops on the The Eras Tour. Performing stripped-down acoustic sets for crowds of seventy thousand people a night demands iron-clad vocal precision. That large-scale experience transformed her approach to live performance and sped up the writing of new songs with a far more energetic pulse.
In June 2024 she released her second studio album, The Secret of Us, recorded again with Dessner at Long Pond and at Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan. The album included the duet Us with Swift herself and the track That's So True, a song that climbed to the top spots on the British and American charts. Her sound was no longer just a whisper from the bedroom.
The project landed at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in its release week and boosted attendance at her own headlining indoor tour.
The pace of work didn't slow down after the commercial success of her second era. In July 2026, Abrams released her third studio album, titled Daughter from Hell, in which she explored pop with gritty electric guitars and analog rhythm sections, exemplified by singles such as Hit the Wall.
The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 124,000 units sold in the United States during its first seven days on the market.
All the vocal tracks from that recording session were captured with a single Shure SM7B microphone run through a Neve 1073 preamp, in one uninterrupted take.

Things you probably didn't know about Gracie Abrams
Writing is the love of my life, so I'm grateful that I had an example of someone who also loves it entirely in really close proximity to me.
Ooh, bet you're thinking, "She's so cool"Kicking back on your couch, making eyes from across the roomWait, I think I've been there tooOoh, you've got me thinking, "She's so cool"But I know what I know and you're just another dudeOoh, that's so true
Songwriting has been my outlet since I started writing at eight years old. It was a thing that I did when I had big feelings and didn't want to talk to other people about them. It's always been the place where I think I've shown up most honestly.
Be really aware of the vampires who are always lurking. People are scary and don't have your best interest at heart most of the time. And that's just the truth.
The night that we wrote the song was kind of this feverish catch-up about our lives. And I think our friendship fostered an environment for a very dramatic song to come about, which is fun.
Songwriting, for me, was always just a personal outlet to deal with my experiences without having to talk to anyone, especially my parents for many years.
