Griffin Gluck didn't have to look for film because film was already in the family living room. His father is director Cellin Gluck, and his mother is producer Karin Beck. He grew up among cameras and learned early that acting is a craft of long waits and great patience.
He is a survivor of the child star industry.
In 2011, he appeared in Just Go with It. Keeping up with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston at just ten years old takes a cool head that you can't learn at acting schools. That comedy grossed more than 214 million dollars and put him on the radar of the major Los Angeles studios.
Before breaking into global fame, he tried his luck in conventional television. In 2014, he starred in Red Band Society under the production of Steven Spielberg. But the series was canceled after just one season due to low ratings. It was his first real taste of the volatility of a business that tends to forget its promises quickly.
And the gamble on risk paid off.
In 2017 Netflix gave him the role of Sam Ecklund in American Vandal. The series parodied the true-crime genre with impeccable technical seriousness. Gluck handled the dry humor with precision and definitively moved away from his image as the blond kid from cereal commercials.
The critical success was unexpected for a production about obscene drawings in a parking lot. The industry realized Gluck could carry complex plots without losing comedic rhythm.
In 2019 he joined the cast of Tall Girl. It was not a masterpiece of cinema, but viewing numbers were massive worldwide. Gluck understood then that relevance depends on the ability to appear on the home screens of millions of devices at once.
He played Gabe in the series Locke & Key between 2020 and 2022. It was his most serious foray into fantasy and suspense. Filming in Toronto required him to work with complex digital effects and green screens for months on end.
But the actor was after something darker.
In 2023 he joined the cast of the second season of Cruel Summer. The show's structure required filming scenes set in three different years on the same workday. Gluck had to manage constant changes in hairstyle and physical demeanor to differentiate his character's stages in the final cut.
Technical discipline took over from the natural instinct of his early years. The actor spent months in Vancouver working under the supervision of Jessica Biel's production company to fine-tune the tone of a youth thriller that required almost theatrical precision.
The production contract for this project was closed with an estimated budget of 4 million dollars per episode.
