Guy Ritchie was expelled from school at age 15 due to drug use and severe dyslexia that no one knew how to manage.
This lack of formal education largely explains his distinctive visual style. In 1995, he shot a short film titled The Hard Case, and three years later he secured the money for his first feature film. He needed just £800,000 to turn British cinema upside down.
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) not only grossed $28 million at the box office. It introduced a frenetic editing style and dialogue loaded with criminal slang that sounded authentic because he himself moved in those London circles. But commercial success doesn't always guarantee creative stability.
And the money started rolling in.
In 2000, he directed Snatch and confirmed that his style was no fluke. The film featured Brad Pitt in a supporting role that the actor asked for after seeing Ritchie's debut. The director proved he could handle bigger budgets without losing the music-video rhythm that made him recognizable on any screen.
His relationship with Madonna drastically changed the course of his career. In 2002, he shot Swept Away with her as the lead, and the result was an unmitigated financial disaster. The film cost $10 million and grossed less than a million worldwide.
The critics savaged him.
After that stumble, he tried to recapture his essence with Revolver (2005), but the plot proved too convoluted for general audiences. It was a period of doubt in which the director seemed to have lost his feel for the streets. He only regained the industry's favor when he accepted assignments from major Hollywood studios.
In 2008, he released RocknRolla as an attempt to return to his London roots. Although the film did well with his most loyal fans, it didn't reach the box office numbers of his earlier work. So he decided to change scale and take on the big budgets of Warner Bros.
The release of Sherlock Holmes in 2009 marked his definitive entry into the league of directors who generate massive profits. The film grossed $524 million at the box office. Ritchie applied his slow-motion technique and tactical analysis of fight scenes to a 19th-century character, and the gamble paid off.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2011, he repeated the formula with Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, outgrossing the first installment. From there, his career entered a phase of industrial-scale production. In 2017, he directed King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, but the film lost nearly $150 million for the studio due to an inflated budget of $175 million.
Despite that failure, Disney entrusted him with the live-action version of Aladdin (2019). It was his biggest commercial hit to date, surpassing the $%1,000 million box office barrier. But the director preferred to quickly return to gangster stories with The Gentlemen (2019), where he regained full control over the script.
In 2023, he released The Covenant, centered on the war in Afghanistan. It was a major shift in tone, in which he abandoned his usual visual tricks in favor of a dry, direct realism. The film barely grossed $21 million against a budget of $55 million.
In 2024, he launched the series The Gentlemen for Netflix and released The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare in theaters. For the year 2025, he has scheduled the release of In the Grey, with a cast led by Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal. His work pace remains at one film per year since 2021.
