Sales, Ties and a Late Casting Call

Hakan Dinçkol never sought fame while managing sales teams at multinational companies. He was 34 years old when he stepped onto his first professional set in 2015. Before that, his life revolved around sales targets and offices in Istanbul. But the training he received at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, where he studied teaching, ended up leading him to a different path than the classroom.

His entry into the industry did not follow the usual path of drama schools starting in adolescence. In 2015 he landed the role of Fırat Kozan in the series Asla Vazgeçmem. It was a blunt, direct debut. And it worked because audiences connected with a maturity that younger actors couldn't project on screen.

Turkish television is a meat grinder for new faces.

Dinçkol avoided being forgotten by taking on back-to-back action and military drama projects. In 2017 he put on the uniform to play Sergeant Ali Çekiç in Savaşçı. The shoot demanded a level of physical preparation that the actor already had thanks to his love of sports. That production ran for several seasons, but he chose to move on to other genres before being typecast in war dramas.

In 2018 he appeared in Yuvamdaki Düşman. Here he explored domestic psychological thriller. Audiences began to recognize him as a supporting actor capable of carrying complex storylines without relying on gimmicks. His acting style is based more on restraint than on the histrionics common in certain Ottoman-style productions.

The Weight of Playing the Father of the Nation

Playing a historical figure in Turkey is a high-risk move for any career. In 2022 he took on the challenge of bringing Mustafa Kemal Atatürk to life in the Netflix series Pera Palas’ta Gece Yarısı. It was not just another role. The level of public scrutiny over this performance was intense from the moment the cast was first announced.

He had to sit through makeup sessions lasting several hours to achieve the physical resemblance needed. But the real challenge lay in the voice and gestures of a man who is a national symbol. Critics praised his restraint on screen. He managed to avoid caricature in a science fiction setting full of time travel, which made the character's believability much harder to pull off.

And the gamble paid off.

That same year he worked on Yargı, known outside its borders as Family Secrets. He played Cüneyt, a lawyer who moved through the gray areas of the justice system. It was a role that let him show a more cynical and ambitious side. In 2022, he also joined the romantic comedy Senden Daha Güzel to play Ali Bıçakçı.

Short Shoots and Viewership Numbers

The Turkish TV industry depends entirely on weekly ratings. Dinçkol saw this firsthand with the project Arak, which was later renamed Kara between late 2023 and early 2024. Despite its flawless production values, the series failed to hit the numbers expected by the broadcaster Show TV.

Sometimes a good script isn't enough to save a production from an early cancellation.

Hakan Dinçkol keeps a low profile off the film set. His personal life rarely makes headlines and is mostly centered on his role as the father of his daughter Mayra, born from his previous marriage to Merve Erol. He approaches acting like an office job with hours that are sometimes impossible.

In his contracts, he usually prioritizes the quality of the technical crew over being the sole star. He prefers ensemble casts where the pressure of success doesn't fall on a single name. The series Kara ended its run with episode five by the network's unilateral decision due to a 3% share in the core demographic.
