Helena Rojo never sought the camera, but the camera found her on the runways of the 1960s. She started as a haute couture model and soon moved to the big screen with roles that demanded more presence than dialogue. Her training with directors of the stature of Carlos Ancira shaped an acting style built on restraint.
In 1972, Werner Herzog chose her to shoot Aguirre, the Wrath of God in the depths of the Peruvian jungle. The shoot was chaotic, with the actress having to deal with the eccentricities of Klaus Kinski and extreme weather conditions. The film put her on the map of international auteur cinema without relying on grand artifice.
Shortly after, she worked under Arturo Ripstein in El castillo de la pureza for 1973. The role earned her first Ariel Award and broke away from the decorative-woman image the industry tried to pin on her. Rojo proved she could carry suffocating psychological dramas with an enviable economy of gestures.
She preferred silence to the noise of fame.
In 1976, she appeared in Más negro que la noche under the direction of Carlos Enrique Taboada. This foray into Mexican horror cinema is still studied today for the way it built suspense. Her real transformation, however, would come with maturity and her definitive move to mainstream television.
Many film purists criticized her decision to enter the world of telenovelas during the 1980s. Helena Rojo ignored the comments, believing that mass audiences deserved quality performances. So she accepted complex roles that moved her characters away from the victim stereotype common in the genre.
The gamble paid off.
In 1998, she starred in El privilegio de amar alongside Adela Noriega. The production reached screen shares above 40% in several countries across Latin America and Europe. Her performance as Luciana Duval gave her full control over her career and allowed her to choose projects with greater contractual freedom.
In 2003, she joined the cast of Amor real to play the protagonist's mother. This period drama, set in the 19th century, saw the actress command the screen with an authority that often overshadowed the rest of the cast. The production won multiple awards and was exported to markets as diverse as China and Russia.
And the respect of her colleagues was always unanimous.
During the 2010s, the actress became far more selective about her appearances. She took part in the series Cuna de lobos in 2019, playing a character that paid tribute to the tradition of Mexican suspense. She never stopped working in theater, where she felt freest to experiment with classic and contemporary texts.
In 2023, she filmed the telenovela Vencer la culpa while dealing with health problems she kept private to avoid the press's constant pursuit. Her co-stars later recalled her extreme punctuality and her ability to memorize complex dialogue despite her physical exhaustion. Her last television appearance was in El Conde: Amor y honor, also filmed in 2023.
She passed away on February 3, 2024 at her home in Mexico City from liver cancer. The news was confirmed in a brief statement from the National Association of Performers at three in the morning. She was 79 years old at the time of her death.
