Hikaru Midorikawa walked into the Aoni Production studio in 1988 with a voice that didn't fit the shouting-hero mold of the era. He was twenty years old and had a dry vocal range that soon caught the attention of casting directors. In 1991 he landed his first leading role in Future GPX Cyber Formula, but it was his work in 1993 that changed the course of his career.
He played Kaede Rukawa in Slam Dunk, and Japanese audiences discovered that silence could be more expressive than shouting. Midorikawa quickly understood that his value lay in restraint. That coolness also helped him bring Heero Yuy to life in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing during 1995.
Nobody expected such a frosty tone to work.
That character of few words forced him to work on his breathing and on the subtlest nuances. Contracts started piling up on his desk. But he decided not to limit himself to TV animation and turned to video games (a sector that, at the time, was starting to demand top-tier voice actors).
In 1990, he voiced Marth in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light for the Famicom. That role became a constant in his professional career. In fact, Midorikawa has played the prince in nearly every installment of the franchise, including Fire Emblem Engage in 2023.
Before recording, he prefers to study the character's design instead of just reading the script. That way, he makes sure his voice fits the visual style of the warrior or villain of the moment. This approach allowed him to take part in more than 500 different projects, including series and console games.
And the gamble paid off.
His vocal range became essential for software developers. In 1994 he took part in Virtua Fighter 2, and in 1998 he lent his voice to Dead or Alive. His ability to maintain an elegant tone while delivering battle cries gave him a competitive edge over other peers of his generation.
Over the decades, his voice gained a fuller, denser quality. In 2019 he took on the challenge of playing Garou in One Punch Man, and the result was a character who radiated constant menace. It was a shift from the young leading-man roles of the nineties (the ones that first made him famous).
But his activity didn't slow down when he turned fifty. In 2022 he returned to his role in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, bringing a veteran presence that only thousands of hours in front of the microphone can give. Midorikawa is also a tech enthusiast and often posts on social media about the equipment he uses in the studio.
Control of the breath is his constant obsession.
During recording sessions for 2023 for various titles in the Tales of series, he kept up his pre-recording isolation routine to avoid straining his voice. He avoids cold drinks and direct air conditioning, even during the harshest summers in Tokyo. In 2024 he renewed his ties with Aoni Production and still commands the highest rates on the actors' union pay scale. His current contract stipulates a maximum of four hours of recording per session to preserve the quality of his voice.
