Huang Junjie

Huang Junjie entered the industry quietly. In 2016 he made his debut in Fox in the Screen at just eighteen years old. There were no big marketing campaigns or promises of instant stardom. But his look fit what period drama producers were looking for in their young casts.

That first role taught him how the pace of Chinese film shoots works.

Shortly after, he was admitted to the Beijing Film Academy. He was the second-best applicant in the entire country on the entrance exams in 2018. That score says much more about his discipline than any promotional interview. In the academy's hallways, he learned that physique is a tool, but control of silence is what makes a true actor.

The Weight of a Franchise

In 2020, his name appeared in the credits of Reunion: The Sound of the Providence. Playing Zhang Qiling in China is no small feat. He is a cult character who demands absolute physical control and a gaze that speaks without dialogue. He won over a legion of fans who are usually relentless with adaptations of Nanpai Sanshu's novels.

And it worked.

That same year he appeared in Eternal Love of Dream, playing Bai Zhen, and showed that the xianxia genre suited his bone structure well. But the industry is fickle. Just as his career was taking off, personal problems pulled him out of the spotlight for a while. Social media pressure in the Asian market is not forgiving of youthful mistakes.

The Comeback Through the Back Door

Getting back to work was not easy. In 2021 he shot Truth or Dare, but the atmosphere was already different. Contracts in C-dramas are strict about public image. So Huang Junjie had to work in the shadow of projects that took years to see the light of day due to distribution problems.

In 2024, The Spirealm premiered. The production was troubled by regulations against the supernatural suspense genre, which forced drastic changes to the final cut. The premiere lasted only a few hours on the iQIYI platform before being pulled for administrative and licensing reasons.

Despite the chaos, the series circulated widely through alternative channels.

The actor played Lan Zhu with a maturity he did not have in his early work from 2017. The years of mandatory hiatus gave him a seriousness that casting directors now value more than his smile. Filming for this series took place at the Hengdian studios, with temperatures dropping below minus five degrees Celsius during night scenes.
