Iddo Goldberg arrived in London at ten years old and in complete silence. He didn't speak the language, but he watched the faces of passengers on the Tube with an almost clinical curiosity. In 1975, he was born in Haifa, and by the late nineties he was already working on British television sets.
The British industry embraced him for his ability to not come across as a foreigner.
His first steps were anything but glamorous. He worked in cafés and accepted tiny roles in procedural series while polishing an accent that is now his sharpest tool. In 2007, he played Ben in Secret Diary of a Call Girl, and that role gave him the visibility he needed to move on to higher-budget productions.
That character was the emotional anchor of a series about sex and money. But Goldberg didn't want to be typecast as the sympathetic friend. So he looked for projects where his look, a mix of Mediterranean toughness and English elegance, could fit darker settings.
In 2013, he worked under Steven Knight to play Freddie Thorne in Peaky Blinders. The shoot in Liverpool recreated a gritty, industrial Birmingham, and Goldberg brought a restraint that contrasted with the Shelby family's theatrics. It took him only one season to make it clear he could hold his own against any leading man.
And the gamble paid off.
A year later, in 2014, he moved to Louisiana to film Salem. There, he played Isaac Walton across thirty-six episodes full of mud, curses and a suffocating atmosphere. It was his first major long-term commitment to American television and proof that his range could handle supernatural drama.
During that time, he balanced acting with his interest in photography. Goldberg has always preferred to keep a low profile off set. In 2012, he married actress Ashley Madekwe, and the two have built parallel careers in Hollywood without getting caught up in the tabloid circuit.
In 2020, he joined the cast of Snowpiercer to play Bennett Knox. The production of this sci-fi series required actors to spend fourteen hours a day inside cramped train cars built in studios in Vancouver. The production design was so realistic that the exhaustion seen on screen is often genuine.
There was no room for subtleties in that script.
Goldberg played the train engineer with a technical restraint that became the story's secondary engine. In 2022, he appeared in the miniseries The Fear Index alongside Josh Hartnett, showing that financial thrillers were also part of his career plans. He isn't chasing massive stardom, but he does aim for recurring work on projects with flawless visual craftsmanship.
He finished filming the fourth season of Snowpiercer in 2024 after several delays in distribution caused by ownership changes at the original network. Goldberg lives in Los Angeles and runs his own photography projects between shoots. The series closed its production cycle with an estimated total budget of five million dollars per episode.
