Irène Jacob was born in Suresnes in 1966 but grew up in Geneva, surrounded by books and sheet music. Her father was a physicist and her mother a psychologist. The intellectual atmosphere at home didn't encourage stardom but rather academic curiosity about the arts and the piano.
Louis Malle gave her her first real break in 1987 with Au revoir les enfants. It was a brief role, but enough for the French film industry to take note of her name for casting. She preferred to return to her acting classes on Rue Blanche in Paris.
Krzysztof Kieślowski chose her to replace Andie MacDowell in La double vie de Véronique in 1991. The Polish director was looking for an emotional transparency that the American actress wasn't managing to convey in rehearsals. Jacob won the Best Actress award at Cannes at just 25 years old.
That victory didn't go to her head.
She turned down leading roles in major productions to shoot Three Colors: Red in 1994. The film became a cornerstone of late-century European cinema. Jacob played a model who forms a strange relationship with a retired judge through eavesdropped phone conversations.
And the bet on auteur cinema paid off.
Hollywood pushed until, in 1998, she accepted a role in U.S. Marshals. She shared the screen with Tommy Lee Jones and Wesley Snipes in a sequel that aimed to repeat the financial success of The Fugitive. Critics were not kind to her performance in a genre that was foreign to her in pacing and concept.
That foray into action-packed blockbusters was brief.
She decided her place was in projects with greater psychological weight and fewer special effects. By 1995 she had already worked with Antonioni and Wim Wenders on Beyond the Clouds. But commercial cinema began to lose its appeal for her, while theater took up more and more of her daily life and career.
In 2016, she regained international visibility thanks to television. Her role in the series The Affair during the third season introduced a new audience to her restrained, elegant style. In 2019, she published her first novel, titled Big Bang, which explored memory and loss.
During 2023, she appeared in the series Liaison for a global streaming platform and starred in the film Seven Veils under the direction of Atom Egoyan. Her pay on low-budget French productions is usually a fraction of what she earned in the 1990s. The contract for her 2025 theater project limits performances to a maximum of four per week in the city of Lyon.
