Italia Ricci arrived in Hollywood with a suitcase full of hopes and a supporting role in American Pie Presents: Beta House in 2007. That fast-food comedy did not promise a career tied to political drama. But the industry runs on accumulated screen time, and she embraced the game from the start.
She spent several years chaining together brief appearances in series such as How I Met Your Mother and House. On those sets, she learned that American television is a meat grinder for new faces if you don't have a survival plan. And Ricci had one.
In 2014, she landed the lead role in the series Chasing Life. She played a young journalist suddenly diagnosed with cancer. The show ran for thirty-four episodes before its final cancellation in 2015.
There was nothing artificial about her performance.
Her breakthrough with the mainstream audience came in 2016 with the premiere of Designated Survivor. Ricci played Emily Rhodes, a political adviser who ends up as chief of staff in a White House devastated by a terrorist attack. She shared the set with Kiefer Sutherland across three seasons of intense storytelling.
This series went through a major change of hands. After two years on ABC, Netflix bought the rights to produce a third season of ten episodes in 2019. It marked the end of a phase defined by rapid-fire dialogue and the pace of an institutional thriller.
And the gamble paid off.
During that time, she balanced political drama with forays into DC's superhero universe. In 2016, she played Silver Banshee in the series Supergirl. The makeup process for that character required five hours of work every day before filming began on set.
After the government intrigue ended, she looked for projects with a more pronounced fantasy element. In 2022, she headlined The Imperfects for Netflix, playing a scientist trying to reverse failed genetic experiments. The company decided not to renew the series after just one season on the platform.
Ricci has consistently worked on Christmas and family-themed productions. In 2023, she starred in Catch Me If You Claus for the Hallmark Channel. Projects like these are typically shot in just three weeks across various locations in Canada.
Her academic background at Queen's University in Ontario has always been her professional safety net. Because she knows fame is a volatile resource that depends on algorithms and casting decisions. The syndication deal for her older series continues to generate residual income in 2024.
