John Anthony Gillis was the youngest of ten brothers in a Polish neighborhood of Detroit. Before electric guitars came furniture. He set up an upholstery shop called Third Man Upholstery, where he began hiding poems and records inside the sofas he repaired for his customers. That obsession with what can't be seen but can be felt shaped his understanding of art from the very beginning.
In 1997, he formed The White Stripes with Meg White. They told the press they were siblings when in reality they had been married. That small fiction protected the intimacy of a band that needed nothing more than a basic drum kit and a distorted guitar to blow up the sound of commercial radio. The rules were strict: they could only use red, white, and black.
Minimalism was a religion to him.
They released White Blood Cells in 2001, and the world discovered that garage rock could be sophisticated without losing its grit. But White didn't want to limit himself to festival stages. In 2003, he accepted a role in the film Cold Mountain under the direction of Anthony Minghella. He not only composed songs for the movie but also played a traveling musician in the middle of the American Civil War. It was his first real encounter with big-budget film storytelling.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2009, he founded Third Man Records in Nashville. It isn't just a record label but a bunker against extreme digitization. The building houses a vinyl pressing plant and a 1947-inch direct-to-disc recording booth. White scorns the convenience of computers because he believes the physical resistance of instruments is what sparks creativity.
That philosophy led him to collaborate with Alicia Keys in 2008 on the title theme for Quantum of Solace. It was an odd piece for the James Bond franchise. Critics were divided, but the musician stuck to his position of not retouching the imperfections of the original recording. For him, technology is a tool that often spoils the soul of a performance.
In 2012, he started his solo career with the album Blunderbuss. Blue replaced the red of his previous era, and the instrumentation became much denser. But the change wasn't an aesthetic whim. White needed to shake off the shadow of his own legend so he could produce legends like Loretta Lynn or Jerry Lee Lewis in his own studio.
Discipline is non-negotiable in his workshop.
Martin Scorsese called him in 2023 for a brief role in Killers of the Flower Moon. White plays a radio program actor in a scene that closes the circle of his relationship with classic cinema. He isn't after top billing on the big screen. He prefers to appear as a technical detail or a supporting player who adds a specific texture to the footage.
His activity didn't stop after the 2020 pandemic. In 2022, he released two separate albums titled Fear of the Dawn and Entering Heaven Alive. The first explored almost industrial sounds, while the second returned to the acoustic folk he learned in the Appalachians during the shoot of his early films. He's a man who works by accumulating projects rather than riding waves of inspiration.
In 2024, he anonymously distributed his album No Name through his physical stores. Customers received the vinyl in plain white sleeves with no printed information. It was a guerrilla move to force listeners to focus exclusively on the guitar's frequency. The album was recorded entirely in his private studio in Nashville with a production crew kept to a bare minimum.
The first pressing of that untitled record sold out in less than twenty-four hours.
