Jan Holoubek was born in Warsaw in 1978, surrounded by scripts and conversations about the acting method. He is the son of Gustaw Holoubek and Magdalena Zawadzka. But young Jan soon decided that his place was not in front of the spotlight but behind it. Instead of studying acting, he enrolled at the Lodz Film School to learn how reality is captured through a lens.
For more than fifteen years, he worked as a director of photography. During that time, he shot commercials and television series while refining a dry visual style with little use for unnecessary embellishment. He learned that a film's atmosphere is built with shadows rather than with explanatory dialogue. That technical phase was fundamental to what came next.
Light is his true obsession.
In 2007, he shot his first documentary, Slonce i cien. It was an intimate portrait of his father and the writer Tadeusz Konwicki. It was an exercise in respect and a way of closing a family chapter before moving into pure fiction. But widespread recognition would not come through documentary work; it came from his ability to portray the corruption of the human soul.
In 2020, he released his first narrative feature film, 25 lat niewinnosci. Sprawa Tomka Komendy. The film tells the true story of a man who spent two decades in prison for a crime he did not commit. It was a huge hit at the Polish box office, drawing more than 700,000 viewers during the months of pandemic restrictions.
And the gamble paid off.
That same year, he directed the series Rojst for a streaming platform. The production recreates 1980s Poland with a precision that shies away from colorful nostalgia. Holoubek uses a palette of ochre and green tones to show a country suffocated by bureaucracy and fear. For him, the setting is another character that dictates how the leads behave.
Jan Holoubek tends to work with the same crew on almost all of his projects.
In 2022 he took over Wielka Woda. This six-episode series depicts the flood that devastated the city of Wrocław in 1997. The production was a first-class logistical challenge that required building flood-ready sets and using invisible digital effects. The technical realism of the water scenes placed Polish fiction at an international quality standard that was unusual at the time.
In 2023, he presented Doppelgänger. Sobbowtór. It is a Cold War espionage thriller that explores how the communist system used agents to impersonate citizens abroad. The film avoids car chases and focuses on the psychological toll of living a constant lie for years.
Still, his cinema doesn't pursue a direct political message. He is more interested in the texture of actors' skin and how the glow of a cigarette can define the mood of a room. As a result, his films tend to have a deliberate pace that demands the viewer's full attention so as not to miss the nuances.
His working process ignores the frantic editing trends that dominate today's audiovisual market. He favors long takes and compositions reminiscent of European cinema from the 1970s. On his sets, excessive improvisation is banned, because every frame has been designed in his head months in advance.
The final budget of Doppelgänger. Sobbowtór rose to 10 million zlotys.
