Jella Haase didn't ask for permission to enter the German industry.
By the age of fifteen, she was already shooting short films in Berlin because school theater had become too small for her. She didn't come from a family of actors, and she wasn't looking for approval from intellectual critics. She simply had an electric energy that 2009 casting directors immediately recognized as magnetic and dangerous.
Her official feature film debut in Mama kommt! was only the first step in a guerrilla-style acting strategy. She wasn't looking for perfect-daughter roles. She preferred characters with dirty knees and something to hide in their eyes.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2011, Lollipop Monster and Kriegerin arrived. In the latter, she played a young woman linked to neo-Nazi groups. It was a physical, raw performance that earned her the Bavarian Film Award for Best Actress Revelation. That year, the industry realized Haase was not just another pretty face in the young talent pool.
In 2013, something happened that could have destroyed her dramatic credibility. She played Chantal in the comedy Fack ju Göhte. The character of the foul-mouthed, shallow student became a mass phenomenon that drew seven million viewers to cinemas in Germany. The success was so overwhelming that audiences began to confuse the actress with her caricature.
But Haase chose to play the long game.
She agreed to shoot the sequels in 2015 and 2017 to gain the financial freedom she needed. But between shooting commercial comedies, she sought projects that would break her public image. In 2016, she took part in 24 Weeks, a brutal drama about late-term abortion that competed at the Berlinale. It was her way of showing she was still there, beneath Chantal's makeup.
Because German auteur cinema needed that rawness.
In 2020, the project that definitively cleaned up her image arrived. In the new version of Berlin Alexanderplatz, directed by Burhan Qurbani, she brought Mieze to life. It was a raw performance that stripped away any trace of humor. International critics placed her on par with the great European actresses of her generation.
Her leap into the global market came in 2022 with the premiere of Kleo. In this Netflix series, she plays a Stasi assassin seeking revenge after the fall of the Berlin Wall. It's a role that blends pure action with finely tuned cynicism. The production was renewed for a second season, which was filmed during 2023 in locations in Germany and Spain.
Haase now controls the pace of her career with unusual maturity. In 2024, she took part in dubbing major animated productions and stayed committed to independent film by shooting Chantal im Märchenland. The film marked a reunion with her most famous character, but from a deconstructive and satirical angle.
Her name no longer appears only in acting credits. She has started to get involved in the creative decisions behind her most personal projects. In 2021, she won the German Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for Lieber Thomas, cementing her institutional standing.
The international distribution deal for her latest series was closed for a figure close to five million euros.
