Jeong Dong-hwan debuted in 1973 after training at the Seoul Art Institute. His entry into acting was neither an accident nor a quest for quick fame. In those years, the Korean theater scene demanded physical discipline, which he absorbed right away.
Theater is his real refuge.
He is an actor who prefers silence to constant media exposure. Still, his face is impossible to avoid for any fan of Asian cinema. In 1981, he won the Baeksang Arts Awards for Best New Actor for his work in Late Autumn. That recognition allowed him to move into television without losing the respect of Seoul's intellectual circles.
He doesn't need to shout to fill the frame. His technique relies on a restraint that stands out in South Korean commercial television (where overacting tends to dominate). He understands that the camera captures thought before movement.
In 2002, he played Kim Jin-woo in Winter Sonata. That drama reshaped South Korea's economy and landed in the living rooms of millions of households across Asia. Throughout that decade, he appeared in the country's most-watched dramas, almost always playing the stern patriarch or the intellectual mentor.
He has never needed a leading role to carry a series.
His presence in Autumn in My Heart in 2000 already showed his ability to elevate melodramatic scripts. But his career isn't limited to family dramas. In 2013, he took part in Nine (one of the most complex time-travel dramas in cable television), where he proved he could handle suspense with the same precision as tears.
And the gamble paid off. Producers began calling him for projects that required an unquestionable moral authority. In 2019, his role as Manager Noh in Hotel del Luna brought the emotional weight needed to give a fantasy story real substance.
Unlike many actors of his generation, he has not chased success in Hollywood. His market is the Korean language, and his stage remains the daily film set. In 2021, he appeared in Mine, playing the patriarch of a upper-class family, where his restrained performance said more than the dialogue of the rest of the cast.
And the industry knows it.
He has more than 70 productions to his name across film and television. His method is to arrive on set with his script memorized but open to suggestions from the director of photography. For him, light is just as important as the words.
In 2024, he took part in the second season of The Fiery Priest, once again playing a senior church official. The show drew ratings above 15 percent at its premiere on the SBS network. Filming his scenes was completed in just three weeks thanks to his efficiency in front of the camera.
